The march of the crabs (Mar 02 2004 23:39 GMT) - The crab army is advancing, although since they're aquatic it might be the crab navy, but they don't have boats, although it could be argued that they are boats, and isn't it rambling like this that distracts us from the real issue? Dave Noisy learned that Joseph Stalin's people imported the giant Pacific crabs into the Barents Sea so they could be a food source, and what with the lack of competition for the 25 pound crabs with a claw-span of 3 feet, they now number at around 10 million and they're on the move. This isn't a simple case of revenge of the undersea world; the crabs feed mostly on other marine life, further disrupting what little ecological balance is left, and leaving behind "an underwater desert." I can't wait to see what animal they import to deal with the crabs, and what results from that round of "tactics. |

Atkins diet messes with your head (Mar 02 2004 23:39 GMT) - Baggy notes that following the Atkins diet can put you in a bad mood, and as he says, the mere mention of "low-carb" is enough to wreck my day, but with today's article we actually have a side of carb-rich science to back us up! Carbohydrates cause the body to produce serotonin, which is used to regulate your mood and keep you from wanting to ram a lobster fork into your upper thigh (vegans, apparently, have two lines of defense here, what with the carbohydrate surplus and the lobster fork deficit). Of course, the Atkins people dispute these concerns, and I'm betting the argument depressed them for hours afterwards. Meanwhile, Rosemary found another Atkins food journal with some interesting ideas about "ketosis psychosis." The message in this one seems to be that the diet will drop the pounds, but you'll pretty much go nuts on it. |

Buying foreign books in the bookstores here is a rather pathetic experience; their buyers seem to select books by throwing darts at pages of odd catalogs. It's in English, what the hell. |
