How the machine works. (Mar 03 2004 01:59 GMT) - What a surprise that the guy whose company sells this turns out to be a major contributor to folks like this. (Via this guy.) The extent to which hip irony serves the needs of power is well known, but you don't usually see it illustrated quite so blatantly. On the bright side, I'm reminded of Beth Meacham's notion that some people should simply be required to wear large signs reading "LEGALLY STUPID." "Oh, I'm sorry I kept you waiting at the cash register for twenty minutes while I finished a phone call, I'm legally stupid. |

Amnesty International Urges UK Govt To Release Cory Reports (Mar 03 2004 01:59 GMT) - The British government today succeeded in delaying court action aimed at forcing it to publish reports into four murders in the Six Counties. The government got a three-week stay after a High Court action in Belfast by families of the victims. The families brought the case in the aftermath of the Cory report, which examined allegations of security force collusion in the murders, and was presented to the government last October. The Irish government was also presented sections relevant to the 26 Counties from the report, and they printed them almost immediately. |

Edgar Bronfman Embracing Digital Music? I Doubt It (Mar 03 2004 01:56 GMT) - The Inquirer is looking at the new ownership of Warner Music and are interpreting some of Edgar Bronfman's comments to suggest that they're going to embrace new digital technologies and digital music. That seems unlikely. This is, of course, the same Edgar Bronfman who gave a big speech four years ago declaring war on file sharers (long before the rest of the music industry followed suit) and declaring that it was important that a select few folks got to choose what sort of content everyone else was allowed to view on the internet. He's from the old school broadcast world, and everything looks like a broadcast medium to him. |
