Utah law mandates filtering (Mar 03 2004 21:59 GMT) - A woman in Utah has been pushing for a bill to get public libraries to use filters. The article in the The Spectrum ("Southern Utah's Homepage") states quite matter-of-factly: "The bill will cut off state funds to libraries that refuse to put filters on their computers to filter Internet smut." Apparently the woman's hometown library in Cedar City already refuses to carry R-rated movies, so there is precedent for being restrictive about what a public library can make available. The article, interestingly, does not explain what the lawmakers view as an objectionable site, although it refers casually to "porn filters," ignoring the issue of what actually could get filtered. |

AskJeeves denounces paid inclusion (Mar 03 2004 21:59 GMT) - Here's an Interesting Move made by Ask.com. They will will stop accepting advertiser payments for inclusion in its searchable Web database, a move to draw competitive lines between it and Yahoo's new search engine. After much testing of paid inclusion the company found that it can negatively sway search results—producing more commercial and irrelevant lists of Web sites, Lanzone said. Ultimately, that hampers the search experience, he said. |

ACLU takes thrashing in USA Today poll report (Mar 03 2004 21:59 GMT) - conservator writes "A report by USA Today of its recent poll of Americans' perceptions of the Patriot Act states, inter alia, that the ACLU's strategy regarding the Patriot Act ("besides targeting Ashroft") is based largely on "revisiting battles it lost when Congress authorized covert wiretaps in criminal cases in 1968, and when it created a secret court in 1978 to oversee domestic spy probes"; that the ACLU Web site "glosses over legal standards for subpoenas, warrants and wiretaps that were set decades ago and makes it seem that the Patriot Act created them"; and that when the ACLU says that FBI agents can spy on people "because they don't like" the books they read or the Web sites they visit, it ignores the fact that the Patriot Act includes language--on the books since 1978--barring the FBI from investigating U.S. citizens "solely" for First Amendment free-speech activities. |
