Flashforward Report (Mar 04 2004 21:59 GMT) - Just thought I would give a quick update of what has been going on here at Flashforward. So far it has been an interesting conference. The greatest thing so far has been being able to meet many new people, putting names to faces, and get caught up with good friends. There seems to be a really good turnout from some of the familiar faces in the Flash community, many who I didn't expect to see here. There also seems to be a good turnout from the UK, I have been able to catch up with Guy Watson (aka Flashguru) and Peter Hall. |

Joint Hearing on Database and Collections of Information Misappropriation Act (Mar 04 2004 21:59 GMT) - An Anonymous Patron sends us this link to the testimony of William A. Wulf, President of the National Academy of Engineering, during the Joint Hearing on Database and Collections of Information Misappropriation Act last September. During his testimony, Wulf (who was also speaking on behalf of ALA, among other associations) discussed the importance of the public domain to libraries and researchers. He called upon Congress to tread carefully when considering further legislation upon databases and collections of information. He finds little need for any strengthening of protections and in fact fears it will be harmful. |

PC Magazine Reviews Central (Mar 04 2004 21:58 GMT) - PC Magazine has provided a very positive review of Macromedia Central, giving it a 4 out of 5 star rating. Quote: "By simplifying the distribution of multimedia-rich pods, Macromedia may have a winner for applications that aggregate all kinds of content-the goal of corporate portals for some time now. Central's interface looks impressive, and it offers developers and enterprises a promising way to distribute Flash software that runs outside a browser. If Macromedia can successfully tap its inventive developer base and create a vibrant online marketplace for selling and swapping applications, Central has potential. |

Sounds great (i): Dave Clarke, Carla Elves, Lenine (Mar 04 2004 21:54 GMT) - So now the Kid, for whom I've been a musical dinosaur with a few respectable tastes, warns me that should I pursue the burning interests she's aroused with some of the CDs she brings round at weekends, I'll be outpacing her own grasp of contemporary music trends. "Well yes, darling," I confessed at the weekend, "but a lot of this stuff is really good!" Indeed, it's called for a revision of my budget slots, which already feature a smaller allowance for clothes than many people's, a larger one for "culture" with a small "c", less on cigarettes and 'phone bills and more on music. I've also stopped buying one or two magazines from which I've decided I learn little, in favour of more instructive ones. I don't plan to take too much business away from Francis, my favourite newsagent, sage, football fanatic and purveyor of essential local tidings, but he's up against places like Info Presse (Fr) for cut-rate subscriptions. |
