Tinker's Damn (Mar 05 2004 05:59 GMT) - So, more tinkering with the stylesheet and main index, but nothing earth-shattering. After discovering the joys of RSS feeds and reading in an aggregator, I discovered the heartbreak of excerpts-only feeds. So anything that offers a full-text feed is now... |

On This Day: 2004 Edition (Mar 05 2004 05:57 GMT) - Last year, on this day, I wrote a little four year summary of March 4ths past. It was also around the time I added the "On This Day" item to the sidebar. To continue the tradition, here's a snapshot of my life these days. I'm living, with my girlfriend-turned-fiancé downstairs from our old tiny apartment in a huge apartment that floods slightly in heavy rains. I commute daily to San Francisco for work and weekly to Santa Rosa to see the family. |

EU, UK Gave PA $25 Million (Mar 05 2004 05:56 GMT) - Ever wonder where the Palestinians get the money to pay their high-priced legal staff for high-profile legal stunts like last week's circus at the International Kangaroo Court in The Hague? From the EU and the UK, of course: EU and U.K. gave PA $25 million to buy advice. |

Do You PHP? (Mar 05 2004 05:56 GMT) - A great overview of PHP by Rasmus Lerdorf published by Oracle Technology Network. Some quick notes: - Is this the first time that MySQL and PostgreSQL's been mentioned without disdain on an Oracle web-site? - "There is nothing wrong with direct database calls' making use of all the tricks and cheats your chosen database has to offer, to tweak as much performance as possible out of it." This may surprise some people, but I agree with this. |

Contract-Driven Development meets XP (Mar 05 2004 05:56 GMT) - I think there are two kinds of people interested in test-driven development. First, there are people who are very happy not to have to write a specification. If that's what you hope to get from Extreme Programming (XP), I don't think you'll get much improvement. But then there are people who are more seriously applying the idea of test-driven development, the way at least I would consider applying it, where the tests are really systematic. -- Bertrand Meyer |

RSS for RFPs - a good trend (Mar 05 2004 05:55 GMT) - Phil Wendley points out that the State of Utah has an RSS feed on its purchasing page -- a perfect way to track RFPs (Requests for Proposals to all you non-business development types out there). This is smart, smart, smart -- and great news for everyone up and down the public-sector purchasing chain: Public agencies are regularly trying to get RFPs out to a large pool of potential bidders. RSS helps because now bidders don't have to come to the Web site; the information comes to them. |

Please spend 1/5 of your time on innovation (Mar 05 2004 05:54 GMT) - In his column on The Google way, Chad Dickerson points out something that came out at the same time as Orkut did. I'm talking about the Google requirement that their engineers spend 20% of their time on a personal technology project unrelated to their primary project. I think that this policy is incredibly forward looking. I also wonder how long it can last. What will happen after the (postponed but inevitable) Google IPO? |
