I am giving a talk about culture in Brussels and I could use some help (Mar 05 2004 23:53 GMT) - In just over a week's time I am to give a talk in Brussels, courtesy of the Centre for the New Europe, on the subject of Why Libertarians Don't Talk About Culture - And Why They Should. When you are extremely grand, you let things like this come and go with no comment from you other than the occasional "oh yes, that, yes, I think it's on the fifteenth, I'm not sure" (it is on... |

Read/Trust thingie (Mar 05 2004 23:53 GMT) - I found this via lj_nifty.Brad says:We know you don't actually trust people who you just want to read. What I'm trying to get across is this: currently the "friend" system on LiveJournal makes no distinction, and that sucks. |

HotSpotVPN (Mar 05 2004 23:51 GMT) - HotSpotVPN Everyone is talking about this service right now, and for good reason. For $8.88/month, HotSpotVPN provides you access to a VPN tunnel server. The idea is that you log into their tunnel server whenever you're using an open WiFi hotspot (or even a WEP-enabled one, or even a public ethernet drop, depending on how paranoid you are), and you get all of your traffic encrypted so lurkers in your area can't snoop on you. This is actually a pretty nice service, but you can do it for free out of your house if you have broadband and are moderately technical. |

Prions? We aint got no Prions... (Mar 05 2004 23:50 GMT) - Do "prions" exist? The word "prion" is used in different ways. It is used to describe the TSE group of diseases but it is also associated with the "protein-only" hypothesis discussed below. I find it helpful not to use the word prion to describe the diseases, to avoid confusion with the hypothesis. The word is also used to describe the infective agent and I think nowadays it is generally accepted that by "prion" scientists mean a PrP-protein-only agent, without nucleic acid or other molecule encoding the agent's information. |
