Wi-Fi woes (Mar 05 2004 23:48 GMT) - It's good that there's at least one company offering public (for the time being, free) Wi-Fi service in La Paz, Bolivia. It's not good that it's unreliable — or that it has no online tech-support (not much better phone support; their idea of support is "can you wait a minute?").... |

Java Desktop Client vs. .NET Desktop Client (Mar 05 2004 23:48 GMT) - First off, thank you all for your great feedback to my last question. Definitely gave me a more solid footing on my pro-Java stance (which trust me, was already quite solid).I've had some heated discussions with the other people in my company, but methinks the hammer was dropped and server side is pretty much predetermined to be Oracle with C for performance based on existing code and expertise. Middle tier may not yet be determined, but the decision will most likely be influenced by what they choose for the client. The client options are Oracle Forms, 100% Java or . |

Another Motorola MPx Video (Mar 05 2004 23:47 GMT) - "Thanks to our friends at Mobile Gadget News, we've been pointed to a new video of the Windows Mobile 2003 based MPx. The video, which appears to be that of a demo unit (much as you'd see in mobile phone stores, where the device itself doesn't operate, but the physical attributes are accurately reproduced), is provided by Mobile-dreams.net. It depicts more or less every aspect of the phone - other than the actual operation of Windows Mobile - and seeing it handled in person is even better (to me) than the previous previous videos, which looked like somewhat more "marketing" focused." The end of the affair? [Nic Rose] (Mar 05 2004 23:47 GMT) - Analysts labelled Gordon Brown's last two Budgets 'the most important of his career', but the next one will make or break his relationship with businesses. Over the last two years the chancellor has skillfully steered the UK through the global economy's worst patch for more than a decade. He was helped by the Bank of England's equally skillful manipulation of interest rates and a well-timed surge in consumer spending and borrowing, which prevented UK growth from turning negative. However, the country's businesses suffered just as much as those in parts of the world that fell into recession and while the majority managed to struggle through the downturn, thousands succumbed to it. So bosses were somewhat bemused when, on Budget Day 2002, Brown announced that national insurance contributions - a key tax affecting both employees and business owners - would rise by one percent. |
