Copies of copies (Mar 05 2004 23:23 GMT) - A lot of folks have been pointing to the Wired article about the Blog Epidemic Analyzer that purports to track link trends as they propagate: The most-read webloggers aren't necessarily the ones with the most original ideas, say researchers at Hewlett-Packard Labs. Duh. What would be interesting is tracking more situations where mainstream media copies text verbatim from weblogs (Thanks, Lyn). |

Lucy and Desi In San Francisco (Mar 05 2004 23:22 GMT) - Here's a classic photo, from the collection of Steven Garrity, taken in San Francsico: It could be a promotion slick for a new wacky sitcom, a sort of "dot com Odd Couple." |

Formosa Update (Mar 05 2004 23:22 GMT) - The Formosa Tea House is open in their new location at 186 Prince Street (making Prince St. into a sort of "Eddie's Lunch-Formosa Corridor"). Rumours are that the old location, on University Ave., will become a new sushi place, run by the same sushi chef that serves the Atlantic Superstore. I've had lunch twice at the new Formosa. |

Back From the Coast (Mar 05 2004 23:22 GMT) - When we left our story, I was tucking in for the night at the Pan Pacific Hotel in San Francisco. The Pan Pacific is an expensive hotel -- rooms are regularly in the $200+ range per night. I found a $149/night rate through their website, and this was my impetus for staying. The hotel's expense, however, isn't in things that I value: a stunning atrium, a television in the bathroom, with marble on the floors, a two-line speakerphone. |

Eolas Patent Taken Away (Mar 05 2004 23:22 GMT) - The patent office finally got one right (though, it took quite a while). Despite tons of prior art, and a patent that was far from "non-obvious", Eolas convinced a judge to award them over half a billion dollars from Microsoft for using embedded applications within IE. Microsoft started talking about changing the browser in a way that would have broken many web sites. After quite a bit of outcry from many different places, the patent office finally agreed to review the patent, and on second thought, are now rejecting the Eolas patent. Did it really need to take this much time, this many lawyers and this much outcry just to get a single bad patent reviewed and rejected? |
