Many Small Businesses Still Cool to Paid Search (Mar 09 2004 14:59 GMT) - Just one in 10 Internet-capable small businesses reported using pay-per-click advertising, according to a new survey, leaving ample room for the search industry to reach out to local advertisers. In the poll of 460 small businesses with Web sites released yesterday by The Kelsey Group and ConStat, 11 percent reported using PPC advertising. Another 34 percent expressed interest in it, while 43 percent said they were uninterested. The poll was conducted through opt-in e-mail lists that included only small and midsized businesses with Web sites. The actual percentage of small businesses using search advertising is probably much lower, since up to 70 percent of small businesses have no Web site. |

Excuse to Recuse? (Mar 09 2004 14:58 GMT) - Today's Opinion Journal takes exception to the idea that Justice Scalia should recuse himself from a case involving Vice President Cheney and the 2001 energy task force after the two men went duck hunting together. The real game here is to imply that two prominent conservatives are dishonorable, never mind the lack of any evidence. The other intention is to blow so much smoke that Mr. Scalia does recuse himself, in which case the plaintiffs will have removed a Justice who has traditionally given a wide berth to Presidential powers. They'll have a better chance to win in a closely divided court. |

Survey: Most Search Advertisers Don't Track Leads (Mar 09 2004 14:58 GMT) - A Jupiter Research survey found fewer than 25 percent of marketers tracked whether their paid search listings generated offline or online leads. In a survey of 126 U.S. search marketers conducted in February, just 21 percent said they gauged whether their keyword campaigns produced leads for offline sales and 23 percent for online sales. Web traffic is the most common measurement, with 65 percent tracking it. |
