Fannie Lou Hamer was the ... (Mar 15 2004 15:59 GMT) - Fannie Lou Hamer was the civil rights worker who famously said "I am sick and tired of being sick and tired." The daughter of sharecroppers, her eloquence and courage made her a leading voice for racial equality in the 1960s. We were reading an account of her life in Robert Ellsberg's All Saints last night, and came across this quote: "Christianity is being concerned about your fellow man, not building a million-dollar church while people are starving around the corner. Christ was a revolutionary person, out there where it was happening. |

Mayoral Approval At A Blistering 40% (Mar 15 2004 15:59 GMT) - The Mayor's approval has improved to 40% according to a poll conducted by the Daily News (disapproval is at 41%). The pollster who conducted the poll said, "He's really made a pretty nice comeback. It's fascinating. He doesn't have a group that's solidly behind him, and he doesn't have a group that's solidly opposed to him. Every group is split. |

The RSS feed of everything imaginable (Mar 15 2004 15:59 GMT) - The Shifted Librarian points to RSS feeds from Archive.org. Probably best known as the home of the Wayback Machine, which lets you see web sites as they were during selected points in time in the past, the Archive also houses lots of amazing content, including digital versions of the Prelinger archive, old software, and lots and lots of music. The RSS feed of their master collection is fascinating. Live performances by Soul Coughing, Gary Jules, Howie Day, From Good Homes, and others are listed right now, and I’ |

Coming up (Mar 15 2004 15:59 GMT) - I’ve been a bit under the weather for the last four or five days; a weird kind of cold that started in the throat, with totally clear sinuses, but which has in the last day migrated up into my face. At least I’m on familiar territory. |

Why your newspaper should fear topix.net (Mar 15 2004 15:59 GMT) - Because Topix has a news search engine that sorts by zip code. I found stories from my current back yard and a former one. Of course Topix is hoping to target ads to go with these searches, just like Google, Yahoo and all the others. This is what they mean by disruptive technology. Here's a Merc story on Topix. |

1965: A Turning Point for our Language (Mar 15 2004 15:59 GMT) - In his treatise on the changes in our language over the last half of the last century, author and linguistics professor John McWhorter marks the year of his birth as a turning point towards a more relaxed and less elegant use of language. His book, "Doing Our Own Thing: The Degradation of Language and Music and Why We Should, Like, Care" (Gotham Books, 279 pages, $26) claims that the introduction of color TV and a lack of trust in government (Vietnam) began to "elevate the visual over the written in American culture" article here from the Chicago Tribune . |

Now they're called library media specialists (Mar 15 2004 15:59 GMT) - The Record-Journal takes a look at the world of school libraries. "School librarians are librarians, are curriculum resource people, are teachers, are facility managers and professional development teachers," said Julie Hulten, Sheehan High School's library media specialist. The physical card catalog is obsolete in its original card form, and libraries now keep book information on a computer database, accessible from just about any computer anywhere. Technology has transformed the library from a room full of books into a multi-media information source. |

The erosion of high-tech privacy protection (Mar 15 2004 15:59 GMT) - Salon.com has published an article relating to recent claims about research being conducted into data mining technology that have invoked privacy concerns. According to the article writer, Michael J. Sniffen, the Bush government’s ‘fight against terrorism’ has contributed to the closure of two privacy-protection projects and continuing research into somewhat dubious software technology. This relates to an earlier story posted about the activities of DARPA. |

These are people who are passionate about threats to their privacy by businesses and favor government regulation of corporate information practices. That's a huge leap from 2000, when only 25 percent of respondents to a similar survey fit this category. In Google they trust (Mar 15 2004 15:59 GMT) - nbruce writes ""In one sense, with Google, everything is knowable now," said Esther Dyson, who publishes Release 1.0, a technology-industry newsletter. "We were much more passive about information in the past. We would go to the library or the phone book, and if it wasn't there, we didn't worry about it. Now, people can't as easily drift from your life. |

new project... (Mar 15 2004 15:58 GMT) - so, sometime near the end of last week, thanks to Ginger, I found celebrity mugshots online, and one of the gems there was this picture of Johnny Cash:Notice on the frontal shot to the left how the line of his arm and side parallel almost exactly the line of his back and the chair in the profile shot. That is an amazing image. So I downloaded it and played around with it in Photoshop and got this as a result:Anyway, I was inspired to paint it, so on Saturday, Kristin and I drove up to this art store in White Plains, and I bought some oil paints and a 2' x 3' canvas to paint on. |

The Jokes (Le barzellette) (Mar 15 2004 15:56 GMT) - Film Reviews: A multi-generational cast of well-known Italian comics performs one skit after another in "The Jokes," a mildly amusing but largely forgettable entry from prolific helmer Carlo Vanzina. Punch-lines are invariably weaker than the lead-ups, and the sketches, like many an "SNL" one, outlast their welcome. |

Vanilla and Chocolate (Vaniglia e cioccolato) (Mar 15 2004 15:56 GMT) - Film Reviews: A dime-store romance overloaded with enough sappy music to make even Mantovani cringe, "Vanilla and Chocolate" is strictly for Harlequin readers who enjoy watching beautiful people in beautiful locales and don't mind a low-cal content. Italo pic reps flamenco star Joaquin Cortes' feature debut, but the jury's still out on whether he can parlay his dancing stardom to similar big-screen heights. |
