And more interestingly, the French professors (Claude Berrou and Alain Glavieux) who made the breakthrough in turbocodes in 1993, a breakthrough so amazing that most of their peers believed Berrou and Glavieux had made a mistake. Turbocodes are an elegant error checking and correction mechanism that allow an information channel to carry close to its maximal theoretical capacity (see the Shannon Limit, from Wikipedia), as opposed to the 50% or so typical efficiency of comms channels today. |
