Mad Prophets, Poets, and Impoverished Philanthropists (Mar 28 2004 15:59 GMT) - Posted by The Happy Tutor Carnival is as old as social life, as old as hierarchy. The rites of Dionysus, Lupercal, Saturalia, Mardi Gras, the sanctioned subversion of the established order, if only for a day. Carnival reminds all that we are flesh, driven by desire, and mortal, as did the slave who stood behind all-conquering emperor whispering, "Remember Caesar that thou art mortal." Carnival unites us across class lines, as did, for that matter, |

The Abel Prize Winners (Mar 28 2004 15:57 GMT) - Maths 'Nobel' awarded: Pair get prize for formula that counts solutions to problems. The Abel Prize, often described as a Nobel Prize for maths, has been awarded to two mathematicians for unifying swathes of mathematical theories that were once thought to be unrelated. Sir Michael Atiyah and Isadore Singer worked together to create something called index theory, which helps to bring together branches of maths from topology to geometry. Their work can be described as a tool that helps scientists work out how many solutions there are to problems they are trying to unpick - such as how heat flows, or how an object moves. |

Using a P800 as a Bluetooth modem with OS X and a PowerBook (Mar 28 2004 15:55 GMT) - It's taken a Powerbook to convince me of the worth of Bluetooth - synchronising with my P800 is way, way simpler than it used to using the Windows software. Pair up the phone with the Powerbook (which worked flawlessly, to my total amazement), hit iSync and away it goes. Then I started getting adventurous, and wondered what would happen if I used the P800 as a GPRS modem. I never managed to get this working under Windows, and ran out of patience trying. But OS X has made the whole thing a lot easier if you know how - and Dave Miller does. |
