People Want Full Internet Access In The Air (Mar 31 2004 18:16 GMT) - Last year, we chided most US airlines for taking the cheap way out and signing up with Tenzing instead of Connexion for their in-flight internet access. Tenzing offers very limited internet access via the old Airfones that no one ever used. The pricing is pretty high (though, they've adjusted some of their plans), and the access is very limiting. Sure, the airlines didn't have to upgrade their equipment, but the appeal to end users (especially for the price) wasn't very strong. Meanwhile, Connexion requires airlines to install expensive new equipment - but provides full internet access for users on the plane. |

The Offspring Concert Notes (Mar 31 2004 18:15 GMT) - As promised, my concert notes for the concert of The Offspring, March 19 at the Heineken Music Hall in Amsterdam. Be aware that The Offspring is still my favorite powerpunkpop band, so it's likely going to be a positive ride. Didn't get my camera in, so no pictures. My old camera would probably have been okay and I'm quite upset for not bringing it despite having thought about it. The Horrorpops opened the show. |

The Pledge II (Mar 31 2004 18:14 GMT) - Rob, I tend to agree with you, but the counter to that argument is that the pledge is voluntary. In fact, back when I was in school, I long omitted the words in question, restoring the Pledge from the changes made by President Eisenhower. I think singling out the pledge doesn't even make sense. When we're still left government/religion mixes in prayers in the Congress, coin designs, marriage, and religious national holidays, the pledge just seems inconsequential by comparision. |

Cutting edge: Schools and colleges clamor for more computer power (Mar 31 2004 18:13 GMT) - A really good article about schools and Tablet PC's. Just wish they would get past the Etch A Sketch comparison."At Dean College, chalkboard dust and erasers may soon be a thing of the past. Lyn Benton, an associate professor of business and math, is now testing a Motion Computing Tablet PC, a product reminiscent of an Etch A Sketch that projects onto a screen in front of the class. "You used to have to sit in class and write feverishly," Benton said. |

Bill Gates: Hardware to be nearly free in 10 years (Mar 31 2004 18:13 GMT) - hmm...Pretty interesting thoughts from Bill Gates""Ten years out, in terms of actual hardware costs you can almost think of hardware as being free – I am not saying it will be absolutely free -- but in terms of the power of the servers, the power of the network will not be a limiting factor," Gates said, referring to networked computers and advances in the speed of the Internet.....The world's largest software maker is betting that advances in hardware and computing will make it possible for computers to interact with people via speech and that computers which can recognise handwriting will become as ubiquitous as Microsoft's Windows operating system, which runs on more than 90% of the world's personal computers."Many of the holy grails of computing that have been worked on over the last 30 years will be solved within this 10-year period, with speech being in every device and having a device that's like a tablet that you just carry around," Gates said at the Gartner Symposium ITxpo, held by information technology researcher Gartner."Click the Read More to view this article. |
