Sun Follows in Microsoft's Footsteps (Mar 31 2004 21:25 GMT) - Sun Microsystems talked up future products at Sun Software Day earlier this week. And it sounds like quite a few of them, such as gaming consoles, RFID systems and a new 3-D user interface, are paralleling current and future products from archrival Microsoft. |

SQL Server Upgrade Is Sorely Needed (Mar 31 2004 21:25 GMT) - eWEEK Labs Director Jim Rapoza has some harsh criticism for the current (and rapidly aging) version of SQL Server. Rapoza says he is seeing a lot of IT shops running DB2 or Oracle, rather than SQL Server 2000. Yukon, a k a SQL Server 2005, can come none too soon, Rapoza says. |

Situated activity based software (Mar 31 2004 21:24 GMT) - Clay Shirky's recent essay on situated software is right on! I'm sorry I didn't get to talk to him more - at this recent conference we both attended. I did get to drop a meme bomb on him - regarding 'dynamic social networks' - which are based on teh idea that all human's emotions, friends, reputations, ideas, content and status - are constantly changing. This is actually based on a conversation I had with Bill Kearney once. |

Such a perfect crime, he got caught (Mar 31 2004 21:23 GMT) - At lunch today a friend told me a great story about a scam a former co-worker pulled off that was so good, it got the guy caught. I'll call the guy Brad. Brad was a support tech for a major hardware vendor. He also had a side business selling equpiment and third-party support contracts to customers of that same vendor, presumably so they could get support without having to pay so much to the vendor. His business model was highly profitable, at least for a while. |

Sony Ericsson's left-handed cellphone [Engadget]. ... (Mar 31 2004 21:23 GMT) - Sony Ericsson's left-handed cellphone [Engadget]. I am a lefty, so I feel confident in saying this: this is a stupid left handed design. With the exception of the number "1", digit distribution in phone numbers is pretty much random. So you could organize the numbers in any order and still have a roughly similar expected distance that your thumb would have to travel to dial it. |
