one book, one college/university (Mar 31 2004 23:42 GMT) - I'm not sure if this has been done in academia before, but it looks like the library at the Rochester Institute of Technology is sponsoring a "one book" reading program, similar to the ones that many communities have participated in. On the informational page it describes how the library released 100 copies of Leif Enger's novel Peace Like a River into the community, and says "students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to read the book, write comments in the margins, and sign and date the inside back cover," before passing on the book to someone else or bringing it back to the library for redistribution. I think that's a nifty idea. Often reading someone else's notes in the margins of a book drives me crazy, but if I was reading a book as part of a community building exercise like this, I'm sure I would enjoy seeing who else read my copy of the book and what they thought about it. |

Football Tipping 2004 (Mar 31 2004 23:42 GMT) - Well, the AFL has started up again, so its time to dust off the trusty Perl script from last year. Good news is that the AFL hasn't changed their web site for this season, so no changes to the script are required there. The other REALLY good news is that there's now 24 experts rather than 20, which means the script has a bot more info to work with. To cope with the extra tipsters, you'll need to change the following lines in the script. $MIN_GAME_TIPS = 22; |

New Military Inspired Batmobile (Mar 31 2004 23:41 GMT) - JOEL JOHNSON -- Bruce Wayne is the Godfather of Gadgetry, so I think that makes these shots of the new Batmobile pretty topical, really. Like a cross between a John Deere and an F1 car, the new Batmobile is, well ... different. Ain't It Cool has the story behind this... |

American Express Understanding The Nature Of Online Ads (Mar 31 2004 23:40 GMT) - Slowly but surely, it looks like some online advertisers are getting it. The internet is different. It's not the second coming of TV. It truly is interactive, and therefore, expecting users to happily be interrupted in order to watch a TV commercial is ridiculous. BMW got this early on, with their BMWFilms effort, and we've been talking about others who realize the importance of realizing that there's no difference between content and promotion. |

Music For My Messes (Mar 31 2004 23:40 GMT) - As Mae West once said: "I'll try anything once, twice if I like it, three times to make sure." Well, Michele's doing a damn fine imitation of Mae with her revival of the 5 Songs You Can't Live Without (and why, if you have time) meme from a few years back. What the hell, I'll give it a try. 1. |
