OT: Peter Hall sucks at Pool (Mar 31 2004 23:31 GMT) - It's official!! - dont waste your time playing pool with Peter Hall, hes terrible and gets better the more beer he drinks. He whupped my ass in Sydney and in San Fransisco, but ive had some practice since then and now i beat him everytime. Small Print: Peter actually whupped my ass ten games to four, and i thought i was a fairly good pool player, so stay away from him at all costs - especially if playing for cash, hes very competitive. |

The Tao of Being Back Home (Mar 31 2004 23:31 GMT) - I don't know how people who travel all the time do it. I always have to spend at least as many days getting over a trip, be it work or vacation, as I spent on the road. Perhaps the key... |

Two Months to the Hills (Mar 31 2004 23:31 GMT) - I am working my way slowly to the hills over yonder. I could make it in a few days, but the mission commanders want me to be cautious and take things slow. But I sure can't wait to climb those hills :) |

Open Republic, Phase II - ... (Mar 31 2004 23:30 GMT) - Open Republic, Phase II - follow the money Governance is about who gets to decide where the public's money goes. A republic is a government where the peer-to-peer bandwidth is too limited to support a true democracy. A democracy is a government where any citizen who chooses to speak up has an equal voice with the other, equally vocal citizens. We are at an exquisite balance point between the presumption of insufficient bandwidth and wide open, wild west democracy. Politicians, whatever their party, get this instinctively. |

Moonlights | chris papasadero (Mar 31 2004 23:30 GMT) - I really like the floating/outdoor moonlights at Helten. I expecially like the idea of floating lights for your pool... I wonder if they could make some with bladders, so they can be floating below the surface... |

beautiful basil (Mar 31 2004 23:29 GMT) - so one of the best parts about my new apartment is that it actually gets excellent sunlight and i can start an indoor container garden. my last apartment got no sun except for a tiny sliver for 5 min around 4pm. thanks to city living i had a tall building across the street that blocked all the sun. my apartment was always in the shade and my plants all slowly died. but now i have an apt with two huge picture windows that get sun all day as well as a tiny deck (little more then a fire escape really) for me to test out my green thumb. |

A Grind Well Done (Mar 31 2004 23:28 GMT) - This microscopic image mosaic was created on sol 85 after NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Spirit completed a second grind with its rock abrasion tool at the target "New York" on the rock named "Mazatzal." The three-hour, 23-minute grind occurred on sol 83. This grind was performed at the same location but at a slightly different angle than the first grind, which occurred on sol 82. This second drilling now reveals a full and somewhat deeper circle of underlying rock that will allow for a more complete analysis of the interior of the rock. Image credit: |

Voting Technology As Magic (Or Not) (Mar 31 2004 23:28 GMT) - Tim writes "According to an article in the Berkeley Daily Planet, the Open Voting Consortium has developed an open source touchscreen voting system that runs on standard PC hardware, is secure, fast and voter verifiable, and that produces a paper audit trail. They plan (pdf file) on demonstrating it Thursday (April Fool's day may not be the most felicitous choice of dates) at the Santa Clara County government office building in San Jose. I don't know whether the system does everything they claim it can, however, unlike proprietary systems like Diebold's voting machines, anyone will be free to examine the inner workings of their system to see for themselves how it works, and will be free critique it or improve upon it themselves. The whole voting machine issue reminds me of Arthur C. Clarke's famous quote, "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. |
