A Better Fried Chicken (Apr 01 2004 23:59 GMT) - Tipped off by a faithful reader, we replace white flour with rice flour in fried chicken pieces. We're glad we did - the chicken was fantastic! Oddly enough, the kids didn't eat much of the chicken. They'll eat chicken nuggets from McDonald's, but not homemade. Go figure. |

Firewall Failover with pfsync and CARP (Apr 01 2004 23:59 GMT) - 1 Apr 2004: "The two main components provided by OpenBSD are CARP (the Common Address Redundancy Protocol), which allows a backup host to assume the identity of the primary, and pfsync, which ensures that firewall states are synchronised so that the backup can take over exactly where the master left off and no connections will be lost." Is GMail a Joke? (Apr 01 2004 23:59 GMT) - Is Google's new plan to hand out free 1GB email accounts legit, or an incredibly elaborate April Fool's day joke? If it's a joke, it's been exquisitely executed - there's much more to this than a press release -- they've set up a subdomain for it (gmail.google.com), a FAQ, even a signup form. On the other hand, the idea of giving out 1GB of storage free for the asking almost seems preposterous, even with cheap... |

Islamic Ministry Votes quot;No Jerksquot; in Iran (Apr 01 2004 23:59 GMT) - Anonymous Patron writes "According to PRESSRELEASENETWORK.com, Daylle Deanna Schwartz' bestselling book on relationships, "All Men Are Jerks Until Proven Otherwise", has been translated into nine languages and distributed in dozens of countries including Russia, Egypt, and Israel, but it won't be appearing in Iranian bookstores anytime soon. Although the book was translated into Farsi and slated for release by Iranian Publisher Salvan, the Iranian Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance delayed publication until the book could be examined by three Iranian psychologists. Concluding that the book is based on western culture, the Ministry just announced that the book is being rejected for publication because of its unsuitability for an Iranian audience. No further information was available from the Ministry. |

An April Fool's Joke Gone Horribly Awry (Apr 01 2004 23:58 GMT) - Today at work I had a sudden inspiration when my coworker went out for lunch: Switch the desktop on her Mac to display the question mark that it shows when it is so seriously ill that it can't find its own operating system.
