Gilligan auf Naxos (Apr 04 2004 23:58 GMT) - I'm madly packing to fly to NJ in the morning, scribbling a few notes in this buffer as I do so. There's a web page that purports to explain how to set any Armitron watch. I'll try it once I get to my father's house, to see if I can get my watch to correspond to the right time zone. If not, I may just get a whole new damn watch, and blog the instructions before I lose the tiny piece of paper, so I'll be able to find them again. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that watch sales spike when we switch into and out of Daylight Savings Time, due to the (intentionally? |

XML Hackers (Apr 04 2004 23:56 GMT) - News.com reports on the need to secure XML and Web Services. Many years ago, David Megginson talked about new kinds of security vulnerabilities created by XML, primarily through it's careless use of external resources such as DTDs and entities, at an XML conference. |

Button link flaw (Apr 04 2004 23:54 GMT) - From Neil's blog, another scary story about link spoofing with IE (and Opera apparently) Go to this page and click on the link, and then see where you end up. In Firefox, you end up at the page shown in the status bar, as you’d expect, but in IE, you don’t. The reason is that the link isn’ |

knoppix running under virtualpc for the mac (Apr 04 2004 23:52 GMT) - knoppix can only handle 256-color display depth when running under virtualpc, which is kind of a bummer.it’s quite disorienting to switch from virtualpc to native applications. not because the interfaces are different, but because you get used to a sort of moving-through-molasses mode of interaction when dealing with the applications running within virtualpc. the applications on the outside can actually keep up with you.it’s great for being able to test things under icky operating systems that only run on icky hardware, though. |

Religious College = Prison? (Apr 04 2004 23:51 GMT) - I know you gotta have some rules to keep things in order, but this school's rules are a bit nuts. You get 12 Reprimands and a $70 fine for viewing or possessing a rated "R" movie (wonder if that includes this movie). You get 18 reprimand, a $100 fine, 18 hours of community service, and a 50% scholarship reduction for entering the residence hall of somebody of the opposite sex (don't ask what happens if you spend a night with that person, go to a motel room, or have a drink of wine -- it gets messy). Makes me glad I went to a public school. I may be going straight to hell, but at least I had a good time. |
