Wardrobe malfunction t-shirt (Apr 04 2004 00:58 GMT) - I don't need reality TV, inky tabloids, or talk radio. To tap into the latest in lowbrow zeitgeist, I only have to walk down Vermont Avenue here in LA, past the front window of crazy t-shirt store Y-Que (say "ee-kay," means "so what" in Spanish). ... Today, I saw this Free Janet Jackson's Exposed Boobie shirt. Robots, Powered By Pancakes, Condoleezza Rice: |

http://archive. scripting. com/2004/04/03#When:7: (Apr 04 2004 00:58 GMT) - Also worth a pointer is an Orlowski piece that rounds up privacy concerns about Google's upcoming email service. A year ago people wouldn't have been so outspoken with their concerns about Google (many had them, but only expressed them privately). The honeymoon for Google is ending. A reporter told me about their top PR person a few days ago, saying he's the smartest one in the business. I had never heard of him. |

IBM's Open Chip Strategy (Apr 04 2004 00:55 GMT) - Barron's writes about IBM's plan to try and ensure the survival of its Power microprocessors: At a New York City presentation on Wednesday, IBM announced it would allow anyone to freely download a bit of the once-proprietary specs for its Power microprocessors. Big Blue hopes that a Linux-like community of outsiders will design computing products around the Power chip -- products IBM hasn't thought of. For 40 years, the chip industry has been able to speed up computing by shrinking transistors, said IBM chip developer Bernie Meyerson. But you can't make things smaller forever. |

Burgundy prices jump 25 per cent (Apr 04 2004 00:55 GMT) - Burgundy wine prices jumped by an amazing 25% at the latest Hospices de Nuits auction. The sale, although for charity, is a distinct pointer as to the trend to be set by producers throughout the Cote d'Or for the 2003 vintage. Whilst the sale each November at the Hospices de Beaune is better publicised, buyers frequently find it difficult to assess such immature wines which are presented within weeks of the grapes being harvested. |

US: What purpose do AVAs serve? (Apr 04 2004 00:55 GMT) - With the recent advent of Oak Knoll as the Napa Valley's 14th sub-appellation, the question arises, what do appellations and the perceived characteristics of their terroir really mean? Does gout de terroir (taste of the region), as the French put it, really exist? Is it physically discernible, particularly here in the Napa Valley where the idea of an American Viticultural Area is taking on ever more significance? |
