The End Of An Era (Apr 06 2004 23:59 GMT) - After dedicating more than two fun-filled years to this site and the Earth & Beyond community, I have decided to call it a day and close EBPortal. As I was recently reminded, this is a hobby site. Hobbies should be fun, and hobbyists should receive enjoyment from them. To be blunt, I'm burnt out from running the site; it is making far too many demands on me and it has become more of a chore than a fun, enjoyable hobby. |

the GigaByte Wars (Apr 06 2004 23:59 GMT) - The GigaByte Wars have started. Just after Google announced their GMail service with 1Gb of free space for your e-mail, SpyMac has already launched a similar service. This competition is dubbed by some media as The GigaByte Wars Spymac won't scan e-mails for words that trigger targetted ads, while Google will do that. Though a lot of people have been saying this is a bad thing, I actually would prefer Gmail over Spymac exactly *because* of the targetted ads. I'd rather get targetted ads than completely uninteresting ads. |

GEO Targeting Update (Apr 06 2004 23:58 GMT) - Just how fast is the local search market growing? Jupiter Research last week downplayed local search advertising growth in its report "Local Search: Growing Revenue in a Transitional Market." At roughly the same time, The Kelsey Group offered a more bullish local online ad outlook at its seminar "Drilling Down on Local Search." Both Jupiter and The Kelsey Group concede that local search will prove to be a more challenging advertising marketplace than paid search, but the bottom line for advertisers is that the user experience will need to improve if online local search is ever to develop into a viable search ad market. |

Kanoodle Calls Google Pricing Tweak A 'Band-Aid' (Apr 06 2004 23:57 GMT) - Google's new pricing scheme for advertisers will lower the price of pay-for-placement contextual ads displayed on occasions that are less likely to result in conversions. While the new plan was announced on April Fool's Day, it wasn't a joke. The plan is likely to give advertisers more control over the deployment of their ad dollars in search programs. However, publishers, advertisers, and industry analysts are left wondering whether the latest Google AdDance really makes the company's contextual ad program more relevant, or if the pricing shakeup is just a foil for an old bid-market pricing model. Industry analysts and pundits have noted that Google AdSense leaves advertisers with little control. |

Online Gambling Sites Allege Google And Yahoo! Are Caving To Feds (Apr 06 2004 23:56 GMT) - Only weeks after the World Trade Organization (WTO) ruled in favor of protecting the online gambling industry, the industry took a hit via Google and Yahoo!'s decisions to eliminate gambling ads from their networks. Some online gambling providers blame the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) for meddling in the matter and putting undue pressure on media companies as part of an anti-gambling effort. |
