2004-04-19 00:15:03 (Apr 18 2004 23:15 GMT) - Tried installing sshd as a service in Windows XP Professional under Cygwin, but had problems with sshd not finding the host keys. The answer was of course found on the net. If you want to try this yourself, you might take a look at Nicholas Fong's "How to install OpenSSH sshd and sftp server on a Windows 2000 or Windows XP or Windows Server 2003". |

What if they had a virus and nobody showed up? (Apr 18 2004 23:15 GMT) - By now I'm sure you heard about the MP3Concept story. The failure of the mainstream press to cover the story with any accuracy didn't surprise anyone, though the Mac press's similar shortcoming was a disappointment. The analysis that Matt Deatherage wrote in the last issue of The Macintosh Weekly Journal was superb; just another entry in a long, long list of reasons why every serious Mac user must subscribe to the MWJ. Follow-up on the Large-Scale Mail Installation (Apr 18 2004 23:14 GMT) - "The new mail infrastructure helped HEC Montréal manage the e-mail worm crisis we all went through at the beginning of 2004. It also continues to efficiently limit the delivery of UBEs. According to the Call Center Team, "We have noticed an important decrease in calls regarding problems with the mail infrastructure, spams or viruses. The Growing Market for Linux Games (Apr 18 2004 23:14 GMT) - "When I setup a new, custom gaming machine for a customer, and since my store is Linux-friendly, we will usually set up a dual-boot system if they have a requirement for Windows, and I'll pre-load many of the free titles that are available in Gentoo's portage system. People have been extremely happy with the performance of the games, and if they have questions I forward them to my 12 year old son, who is more than happy to show them some tips on our demo machines. I have pre-loaded demos av |

Helpline Comment (26589) (Apr 18 2004 23:14 GMT) - I guess I see a lot of the computer bog-down problems as being a result of "I'm The Most Important In The World" software attitudes. Unless you're a techie-at-heart, you'd probably never think to even look to see what all is running in the background (and the word "systray" would *not* be part of your vocabulary), let alone know how to disable some of that start-up nonsense...or be brave enough to attempt it. If you have a scanner, by all means you'll need to install the drivers, and possibly software. But I've never met a scanner yet that, upon installation, didn't come up into a stand-by mode when the system boots. |
