Sex Does Not Exist (Apr 19 2004 17:59 GMT) - According to Eric Vilain, anyway. You can find his article here (free registration required). I found this quote especially laughable: Sex should be easily definable, but it's not. Our gender identity — our profound sense of being male or female... |

Google May Be Forced To Go Public (Apr 19 2004 17:58 GMT) - Thanks to a 70-year-old provision in the Securities and Exchange Act, Google may be forced to move forward with an IPO, otherwise they would have to disclose closely guarded financial secrets.Companies must report financial results to the SEC once they have at least $10 million in assets and more than 500 shareholders of record, including employees who hold stock options. Google's profits are thought to be $100 million or more. And the assumption -- reinforced by Google's Web site, which touts ``pre-IPO stock options'' to prospective employees -- is that the company has granted stock options to most of its more than 1,000 employees. If those assumptions are true, then Google should have to start making quarterly filings to the SEC by April 30, which is 120 days after the close of its fiscal year. |

April 20 - tax freedom day (Apr 19 2004 17:58 GMT) - SAR just announced (pdf in Romanian) that according to their calculations from tomorrow on Romanians will finally start working for themselves or their families. That means that the yearly working 110 days which supposedly account for income directed to taxes will end today. Apparently a regular Romanian works for 18 days for paying yearly social taxes and only 4 for the property tax account. |

Luscious brightly colored floors (Apr 19 2004 17:58 GMT) - Over at the Apartment Therapy blog, Max has a great post about How To: Paint Your Floors and Not Screw it Up. He and his wife repainted the floors in their summer house and it looks lovely. Makes me long for a place where I could do this. I've never been much of a rug person, and this seems like such an interesting alternative, if you've got the right kind of space. |

Amherst asks: What is this thing? (Apr 19 2004 17:58 GMT) - Thsi thing is from Amherst's Archives and Special Collections. No one there knows what it's purpose is, and they are asking for readers to help. (I'll bet Boing Boing's readers will come up with the answer today.) ... The device is about 12 inches across and is seen here sitting on its flat wooden platform; |

The Java Data Mining API (Apr 19 2004 17:58 GMT) - Data Mining is a very important process used by most companies today. Grouping and analyzing data from disparate data sources is becoming more and more of a problem. This is where the Java Data Mining API or JDM fits in. The JDM, currently awaiting the approval ballot, proposes a pure Java API for developing data mining applications. |

European wine consumption: consumers still prefer a pop (Apr 19 2004 17:58 GMT) - Various attempts have been made by the wine industry to overcome the problem of corking. The most obvious solution, to introduce new bottle stopping materials such as screw tops and plastic corks, have proven unpopular - especially among more discerning wine drinkers. Now, a cork manufacturer has found a way to eliminate the problem and continue using traditional cork. |

Gmail Put through Paces (Apr 19 2004 17:57 GMT) - DM News scored a beta version of Google's new Gmail system and was able to run it through its paces over the last week. It reports very little advertising in the email messages, and the little advertising visible was generally well targeted (Yankee banter spawned ads about Yankee tickets, swag, poor moral character). As conversations between two people evolve in topic, the ads appearing in past messages adapt and change. Ads are most often seen on commercial emails. While Gmail critics have so far concentrated on various flavors of privacy concerns, some companies may find that ads targeted to be placed in their email communications are offensive. |
