News reporting by the witnesses (Apr 19 2004 20:59 GMT) - Tom Nicolai presented a concept how to leverage the widespread use of the mobile phone for a new application: the occasional reporting of news as they happen by the witnesses themselves. Nicolais presentation outlines the idea of a network of independent, interactive 'freeporters'. It was presented on the conference Mobile Entertainment: User-Centred Perspectives on 27. |

Monday (Apr 19 2004 20:56 GMT) - What a day. After my allnighter I had a pretty interesting day which was finished with an extraordinary dinner shared with JD. Problem: I talked to much about my past, damn the alcohol, but I’m a bit confident that the... |

Social killer application ? (Apr 19 2004 20:56 GMT) - There is currently a lot of hype about social software. There's Friendster and google's orkut and some seems to like it and others think these applications are too complicated to be useful. I personally currently don't use any of these online community applications, because at the moment I think I wouldn't have enough time to really use it often enough to get some benefit from them. The one social software I currently use is the social bookmark manager del.icio. |

Just so there's no confusion (Apr 19 2004 20:56 GMT) - Hey, wait a minute. That's not me.* In fact, I'm pretty sure I couldn't ever pass as a "glow-in-the-dark lesbo," what with not glowing and having testicles and all. Fortunately, my archives start five months earlier than hers so when... |

Capitalists for Hillarycare (Apr 19 2004 20:55 GMT) - Daniel Gross on Slate: HCA CEO Jack Bovender came close to calling for a single-payer system, though he still couldn't utter the phrase "socialized medicine." "Hospitals have become the ultimate safety net for health care services for the vast majority of America's more than 44 million uninsured," he said. "It is time for all sectors of society, both public and private, health care and non-health care, to participate in solving this societal issue, by providing affordable health insurance for all Americans and more equitably sharing this growing cost to society." HCA's profit warning points to several other reasons why big business will eventually accept a Hillary-like scheme. |

Nebula awards for science fiction writing (Apr 19 2004 20:55 GMT) - Ah well, Cory Doctorow's 0wnz0red didn't win in the Novelette category - Jeffrey Ford's "The Empire of Ice Cream" did. Still, "0wnz0red" was one of the high points of 2002, a year that was what Cory would call "craptacular" for me - and for a lot of us (but hey, we're still alive). I read a draft of the story in August '02 and suggested to Andrew Leonard at Salon that it was so topical to what they were reporting on - digital rights, gene hacking, government and corporate control of tech powers - that they should run the story, even though it was science fiction rather than tech/biz journalism. To my surprise, Andrew agreed. It made my year, really. |
