Air America crashes and burns (Apr 20 2004 02:59 GMT) - When you write a book entitled Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them, it helps not to be a lying liar yourself. Too bad Al Franken isn't quite intelligent enough to grasp subtlety. Or consistency. With the sputtering liberal Air America network a few weeks old, I thought it'd be a good time to take a fair and balanced look at this joke of a project. (And perhaps it'd be a good time for them to work on their SEO: |

Accepting the Truce (Apr 20 2004 02:58 GMT) - Osama bin Laden offered Europeans a truce, and now the Spaniards are doing what he asked without even getting the promise of no new terrorism in return. Is this step one of a return to dhimmi-hood for non-Muslims in Spain? |

The scrap album (Apr 20 2004 02:57 GMT) - The Scrap Album is an excellently designed and engaging web site on the history of the Victorian pastime of collecting ephemera for scrap albums. The site offers background information on this leisure activity, discussing design and the production of scraps, and provides brilliant digitised images to accompany the text. The subsequent chapters look at some of the different celebrations marked with greetings cards, including Valentine's Day, Christmas, and Easter, and other printed ephemera such as calendars. There is also a chapter on greetings card publishers in the Victorian age, such as Eyre and Spottiswoode, and Raphael Tuck and Sons. (Institute of Historical Research (IHR)) |

Fashion -Era (Apr 20 2004 02:57 GMT) - Fashion-era is an online resource for the history of fashion in Britain. It provides a useful reference resource on costume and fashion history, as well as information about clothing and textiles. The site is divided into several chapters, which feature text and images, and links to suggested books for purchase, though this sales element is not very intrusive. There is an overview chapter that explores the discipline of fashion history, looking at theories and developments. The other chapters provide an overview on fashion periods from 1800 to the present day, with information on Victorian and Edwardian clothing, royal fashion, couture history, twentieth century fashion, and also on areas like body adornment and underwear. |

Canadian war industry during the Second World War (Apr 20 2004 02:57 GMT) - This website is published by the National Library of Canada and National Archives of Canada, providing a database of some 2,870 photographs documenting the role of Canadian civilians in industry during the Second World War. The photographs were taken by the Wartime Information Board over the years 1939 to 1945, and were originally commissioned to encourage the war effort on the home front. All of the images can be searched by keyword, but there is also a highlights section, showcasing three areas; industries, photographers and themes. Industries highlights individual areas such as shipbuilding, munitions and construction, whilst themes highlights things like safety, and women at work. |

Mourning a Terrorist? (Apr 20 2004 02:56 GMT) - How much support can the masses show for terrorists before we say that the terrorists are a minority in a region? "Palestinians" sure seem to support their local terrorists, dead or alive. I wish Prime Minister Sharon (or his successor should he get impeached) success with his disengagement plan, and I hope President Bush shows stronger support for that plan. |

Joe Jabbar at the Bradford UK Film Festival (Vol. 1) (Apr 20 2004 02:55 GMT) - The tradition of the Bradford Film Festival has been to show the work of contemporary filmmakers whilst also honouring the greats of the past, writes Joseph Jabbar, in his Cinema Minima web log. I had decided to focus my attention on Shine 2004 — the short film platform in the Festival. This strand was organised by Catherine Litchfield who put together an interesting and thought-provoking programme of films and talks with industry professionals, all open to the public.
