Niagara. (Apr 20 2004 04:59 GMT) - Ace's Hardware has an article about Sun's next generation CPU code named Niagara. Niagara: A Torrent of Threads has the main concepts behind the design, with a good few assumptions, so please don't assume that I'm endorsing Ace's accuracy. Having said that, it's worth a read if your interested to know where server side CPU technology is headed, and why I say people like Robert X. Cringely don't understand just how much innovation Sun does. |

Cheney Was Unwavering in Desire to Go to War (Apr 20 2004 04:58 GMT) - Cheney Was Unwavering in Desire to Go to War An Excerpt from Bob Woodward's "Plan of Attack" In early January 2001, before Bush was inaugurated, Cheney passed a message to the outgoing secretary of defense, William S. Cohen, a moderate Republican who served in the Democratic Clinton administration. "We really need to get the president-elect briefed up on some things," Cheney said, adding that he wanted a serious "discussion about Iraq and different options." The president-elect should not be given the routine, canned, round-the-world tour normally given incoming presidents. Topic A should be Iraq. |

Jordan's King Abdullah postpones meeting with Bush (Apr 20 2004 04:58 GMT) - Israel/Palestine: Sharon's Disengagement Plan Ha'aretz wonders if Sharon may actually succeed with his plan if only because of those who have qualms with it. JPost looks at what it says it Sharon's strategy for acceptance of the plan within Israel. In what might turn out to be bigger news (one never knows), Hamas has promised not to attack from Gaza if Ariel Sharon follows through with his plan. However, Hamas says it will continue attacks from the West Bank, where Israeli finance minister Netanyahu says Israel will continue to invest millions for settlers. |

Tunneling Variables (Apr 20 2004 04:58 GMT) - The XSLT 2.0 specification defines tunnel parameters as having "the property that they are automatically passed on by the called template to any further templates that it calls, and so on recursively." When working on the big, complex stylesheets described above, if I could have identified the parameters passed to the original template as tunnel parameters, there would have been no need to explicitly pass them to templates that it called. Reminds me of dynamically scoped (special) variables in Lisp. |

Just a couple of orange ... (Apr 20 2004 04:57 GMT) - Just a couple of orange couch potatos - I love this photo. Actually, there's a whole series of shots, but the ones showing me full length are too horrible for the Internet. Stuey's also the reason I'm in a gardening frame of mind. I got all the plants in the ground tonight at last - somehow $95 worth of perennials looks kinda small, but I'm pretty sure they'll grow (some of them will grow to 2 - 3 feet). There'll be a rain barrel right near them so watering them won't be a chore. |
