I've Got the Placebo (Apr 20 2004 16:59 GMT)

- I've had a number of questions about my previous post. Folks want to know what drug I've got, and for what. Aside from a suspiciously SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) like state during winter, I'm pretty sure I'm fine. I'm not taking any drugs or undergoing treatments for anything, as far as I know. Perhaps Chastity is slipping me something.

George W. Bush, theologian. (Apr 20 2004 16:58 GMT)

- "We will never show weakness in the face of these people who have no soul" A question for Electrolite's commenters. Is there actually any strain or denomination of Christianity in which some people are considered to "have no soul"? No, I didn't think so either. (Via Atrios and Whopundit, both of whom leave open the possibility that Bush is referring to our adversaries' lack of James Brown and Aretha Franklin albums.) Let's all hold our breaths waiting for the people who've been slamming pro-choice John Kerry for being a "bad Catholic" to spend just as much energy on this particular point of doctrine.

Short list, High Line (Apr 20 2004 16:56 GMT)

- Nothing posted on their site yet, but the latest Friends of the High Line newsletter sez seven proposals have made the short list for the Master Plan, including offerings from Field Operations/Diller + Scofidio + Renfro, Zaha Hadid, and Steven Holl. Having attended at least one beyond-incredible outlaw party up on the High Line trestle back in the Bad Eighties, complete with snipped barbwire and hand-over-hand climbs up rusty stanchions, I'm sensitive to the potential for overplanning here, to the creation of a sanitized strip that has little to do with New York. Luckily for all of us, I think most of the teams shortlisted are too. I'm already in high-anticipation mode. (Thanks for the heads-up to Jamie Mowder.

Airport woes continue (Apr 20 2004 16:55 GMT)

- We're not the only ones frustrated by reduced signal strength because of yesterday's AirPort 3.4 update. Reports are coming in from everywhere, including the venerable MacFixIt, which reports that its own in-house PowerBook G4 12" with an AirPort Extreme card now displays 0 bars or 1 bar at ranges where it previously displayed 3 or 4 after the update. A secondary problem - one I'm also experiencing - has connections dropping after only a few minutes. WHat was once a three bar signal suddenly drops to one and then vanishes altogether.

Second Smile (Apr 20 2004 16:55 GMT)

- It was crew change morning, about an hour before I was supposed to fly in. The rig was conducting wireline operations. Wirelining is when a thin cable is sent down the well with different tools attached to complete a given task. The wire can be several thousand feet down the "hole" and weighs quite a bit at that point. The wireline snagged in the hole and wasn't coming free.
