What next for Real? (Apr 20 2004 23:32 GMT) - LAS VEGAS--RealNetworks CEO Rob Glaser on Tuesday brushed off a recent rebuff from Apple Computer and called on Hollywood to keep new digital technologies open for all to use. Incompatible piracy prevention tools in new digital entertainment services such as Apple's iTunes Music Store and its iPod portable music player threaten to turn off consumers, he said. Tracking Your Kids with RFID (Apr 20 2004 23:31 GMT) - Via the Dottocomu weblog comes this interesting little article about parents using radio frequency tags to watch over their children: "The Nikkei Shimbun newspaper reports that NTT and Dainippon Printing have built a system aimed at kindergartens that allows parents to keep a remote eye on their children using a system of RFID tag readers and webcams in classrooms. Parents log into a website and enter their child's details, a server at the kindergarten determines the child's location using an RFID chip built into their nametag, and it then streams video from the appropriate camera back to the parents' PC. Given the price that RFID tags and readers are set to fall to, it sounds like the kind of system that we could definitely be seeing more of in future." Japan Today reports that the system costs 2. |
