RIA Usergroup - Meeting Tonight in Edinburgh (Apr 22 2004 04:59 GMT) - I'm giving a talk this evening for the opening meeting of the UK Rich Internet Application usergroup, on "Developing Rich Clients with Macromedia Flex". It promises to be a great meeting (well, I would say that) with over 80 registered attendees, including developers, architects, and senior management of many financial service organisations. We'll be looking at the business benefits of enterprise RIAs, with many examples and case-studies, before delving into an in-depth look at how to develop R |

"The Phoenix in Decline" (Apr 22 2004 04:59 GMT) - falling, falling down in a spiral to the heat-beaten streets from a sky so blue it burns the eyes hypnotic gyrations from a star-spangled nightmare called justice or truth and we cry for you lost in a fugue-like cohesion a semi-solid malady of being a wounded scavenger scraping the basement of reeking desert valleys where carcasses lie bleached bones on which it dined juxtaposed right and left now shining in triumph receiving their due with the remains of their destroyer. (c) MBTankersley, 2004 * * * Wrote this one day after watching the national, then local news. Really get depressed sometimes about the direction of our political process and our society in the larger sense as well. Of course, the scavenger mentioned is a phoenix... could there be a resurrection in store? |

Helpline Comment (26635) (Apr 22 2004 04:59 GMT) - My advice is to never do work at a reduced rate. Even though you're giving them a break, they're still paying you, so they're still the customer. That's not to say that you shouldn't do a friend a favor, or help out someone who's really in need. When those cases arise, do the work for free (or at most the cost of parts). That makes it absolutely clear that this is not a business transaction, it is a favor. |

Scrotum Self-Repair (Apr 22 2004 04:58 GMT) - One morning I was called to the emergency room by the head ER nurse. She directed me to a patient who had refused to describe his problem other than to say that he "needed a doctor who took care of men's troubles." The patient, about 40, was pale, febrile, and obviously uncomfortable, and had little to say as he gingerly opened his trousers to expose a bit of angry red and black- and-blue scrotal skin. Care to find out what happened ? |

Administrivia. (Apr 22 2004 04:52 GMT) - Blogroll updates, RSS feed changes, search engines and more. I've more or less raided the blogroll of (Southern Cross) Words and "borrowed" (ahem) several of his links: Yet another American in Oz, an Aussie in Paris, an expat group blog, and an exciting collection of authentic Aussie blogs. I discovered Kevin Drum's blog (formerly known as CalPundit) when he became the in-house blogger for Washington Monthly magazine, and since then he's become an indispensable voice of reason from the middle. I've also updated my link to Howard Bashman's How Appealing, since he's now become the in-house blogger for Legal Affairs magazine. |
