Two more escape from Quamby (Apr 22 2004 10:59 GMT) - The Australian is reporting here that two more kids have escaped from Quamby. "Both prisoners were wearing Quamby-issued blue track-suits and blue shirts when they escaped. Blue Tracksuits? hard to see at night and fit in well in the community. Nice choice! |

The Big Issue comes to Canberra (Apr 22 2004 10:59 GMT) - Bill Wood's got a media release up here letting us know that the nice little earner of the homeless, The Big Issue, has arrived in our fair city. Bill seems to be trying to sink it with the promise: "The magazine is published fortnightly and carries a wide variety of stories, predominantly about social issues such as homelessness and unemployment.". While I've never seen an Australian edition the UK version was a bit more entertaining than that. |

Civic Library schmozzle comes to a head. (Apr 22 2004 10:59 GMT) - City News has a story here on the looming deadline to do anything with the Civic Public Library. The current lease runs out in December and the Government has decided it can not extend it under any circumstances. Having taken that decision one might imagine a sensible government would make provision for a new permament home, for what is one of the basic fundamental services of a local government. But no, having let the replacement plans (it was to be part of the Canberra Theatre/Museum complex) slip, they're going to jam it into a temporary space in ACTEWAGL house (links between the ALP and the ACTEWAGL board should be disregarded for the moment), where no-one will visit it and then we can shut down the idea of a civic library. |

Boy Wonder on the Cabbage-Like Cabinet (Apr 22 2004 10:59 GMT) - Brendan Smyth has got another media release up here on the questions arising from Cabbage Stanhope's testimony to the coronial inquest. Should the Cabbage (Sub-Cabbage?) grace us with a media release of his own on the subject I'll be sure to let you know. Now, like the cabinet I'm not a fire expert (although the leader of the opposition has some experience) but I do know that in extreme fire conditions containment lines are tenuous and fire can move in excess of 60km/h. A cursory viewing of TV news every summer should have imparted this information surely? |

go chuck! (Apr 22 2004 10:59 GMT) - Republican senator Chuck Hagel (R) came up with the perfect Bush beating tool this week by suggesting the US reinstate the draft. "Why shouldn't we ask all of our citizens to bear some responsibility and pay some price?" he told a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing on post-occupation Iraq. Now we have to focus the attention on where we're going to come up with the manpower to continue operations such as in Iraq. It appears the draft will be unavoidable. |

maybe (Apr 22 2004 10:57 GMT) - Though round-edged boxes and columns that go all the way down do require disappointingly complicated CSS (using little images makes it feel like cheating) I've actually managed to build most of my new design much faster than I'd expected. There... |

Stored Procedures in MySQL 5 (Apr 22 2004 10:57 GMT) - The other day I got pointed in the direction of a new feature in MySQL 5 — stored procedures. Having been previously available in other database systems such as Oracle and DB2, the introduction of this feature sees MySQL AB push their product into the enterprise market. I’d never encountered stored procedures before (so forgive me if my understanding is a little wooly), but they sound very useful. |
