When I Grow Up (Apr 22 2004 14:57 GMT) - All I wanted to do when I got out of school was be a graphic designer, so in that respect, I’m pretty happy with my job. As I get older though, I wonder if perhaps I pursued that goal a bit too single-mindedly, too much to the exclusion of other career choices I could have made. I wanted to be a writer for a long time, and in self-indulgent moments — like when I’ |

AOL's Big Plan: Become A Me Too Portal (Apr 22 2004 14:54 GMT) - Apparently, AOL's big plan to turn things around and save the company is to go back to 1998 and turn themselves into yet another "portal" so that they, too, can take advantage of the return of online advertising dollars. It's not entirely clear why anyone needs another portal or why a "me too" play is all that compelling, but it does explain AOL's recent decision to drop some of the walls from their walled garden. Still, when your grand plan to save the world is to bring your site up to date with what all your competitors did five years ago, it seems like a pretty weak strategy. |

Nabokov for the month--Guest blogger: Denis Johnson (Apr 22 2004 14:54 GMT) - I know, I know. I've gotten so bad at posting the Nabokov passages I ought to be renaming it Nabokov of the Season. Again. |
