Architecture As An Entrance To City History (Apr 25 2004 01:58 GMT) - Note: This post has been updated. Any and all updates appear at the end of the original post. As happens from time to time, a reader recently sent us some of the books about Portland that we have on our Amazon wishlist, including An Architectural Guidebook to Portland, by Bart King. Although, at the time this and the other two books sent to us arrived, we were about halfway through... |

Dedication #7: [insert question here] (Apr 25 2004 01:58 GMT) - Well, this person made a rather nice donation to the cause, and I promised in return I would post on a subject of their choice. The person graciously agreed to my request that I not write the question here, just... |

Red-Letter Day for a 'Green' Building (Apr 25 2004 01:58 GMT) - This is terrific! A building in Cambridge, Mass., is the nation's most environmentally friendly corporate office building. It has just about every innovation to save energy and reduce pollution that anyone has ever come up with, and in the long run the extra cost will pay for itself in reduced operating costs. |

Newspaper Calls Gambling What It Is (Apr 25 2004 01:57 GMT) - Not once in this LA Times story (reg req) about Native American casinos' gambling revenues -- and whether the casinos should pay more to the state -- do you find the word "gaming," I'm happy to note. ... The gambling industry has tried to sanitize what it does by renaming the activity into something that sounds totally benign. And the media usually plays along. Not this time. |

the iCite net radio and music blogging (Apr 25 2004 01:55 GMT) - In my Music blogging motifs post on Wrong Notes, I link to some of the recent, interesting, developments in collaborative music sharing on the web. One of the features I've imagined for the iCite net, as a kind of collaborative online "radio" network, simply imagines playlists combined with backlinks. Imagine if playlists could also link you to all others listening to them and, as well, to the sources of the music (i. |

WinFS is a Domain Ontology with Style (Apr 25 2004 01:55 GMT) - Michael Herman caught onto WinFS's real nature last year and I'm just now catching up. He points to a paper describing ontologies and points out this about WinFS: "WinFS is a knowledge repesentation, storage and synch system ...a literal implementation of a system strongly based on ontology related concepts." For the basics of ontologies for our new world-to-be, Michael recommends Ontology Development 101: |

Security in Longhorn: Focus on Least Privilege (Apr 25 2004 01:55 GMT) - Keith "Mr. Security" Brown kicks off a series of security articles on Longhorn. In this piece, Keith digs into the current plans for making Longhorn a much safer place for applications, only really giving administrator privileges to applications with a special need for them, regardless of the privileges of the user running the applications. This is a core piece of taking back our computers from the world's hackers and Keith lays out the basics nicely. |

Overview of MSBuild, Part 1 of 3 (Apr 25 2004 01:55 GMT) - This week, Christophe Nasarre, one of the best reviewers on my Windows Forms book, has written a 3-article series on the new command line build system and the new build core of Visual Studio 2005: MSBuild. In this installment, Christophe starts from the ground floor, building the most basic .proj files and then exploring the advanced features you need to control your builds. Also, because MSBuild is still under development, this piece covers the details of both the MSBuild in the Longhorn PDC bits as well as the most recent Visual Studio 2005 technology preview. |

Made some saw dust.... (Apr 25 2004 01:55 GMT) - Today I worked on my trailer a little. I went out and rented a belt sander to smooth out the hills and valleys that I made when cutting out my templat for the sidewalls. It worked out quite well and only cost me 5.87 for three hours use of a 160.00 machine. |

FFTS: Mourners Honor Tillman in Arizona (Apr 25 2004 01:53 GMT) - It's not good news for a light Saturday, but it does give you pause to stop and think about just what the guy did. I haven't mentioned Tillman yet because I didn't knwo what to say other than 'Damn, man...thank you." On Friday, the Cardinals set up a table in front of their headquarters with Tillman's jersey in a glass frame. In front was a poster showing... |

Best Buy Customer Service (too many) (Apr 25 2004 01:53 GMT) - So I went to a Best Buy today and as usual there was somebody there to say hello when you walk in. Same as Walmart practice. What makes me feel uncomfortable though is that there are always 5, 6, 7 customer service guys/gals waiting for you in front of the PDA/phone section at the front. I wanted to look at some phones today but I bypassed it at a later time until I could "sneak in" the area. LOL I dunno, I just want to sometimes go look at the items and not get bother by CS folks. |
