Find Your State's Pointless Laws (Apr 26 2004 19:58 GMT) - This is a site that lists strange, outdated, or downright silly laws still in effect in the United States and abroad. Click on your state to find all of the laws you never knew you were breaking. For example, I just learned that it's illegal to take a flamingo into a barbershop in the city of Juneau, Alaska. |

Electrical banana question (Apr 26 2004 19:58 GMT) - Wondering about strategies for charging all the devices that only run on 120volt 60cycle AC. The laptop charger handles 220/50, but the rest of my stuff (e.g. Sony Clie charger) appears to be strictly domestic. Meanwhile I'm charging them all one last time at LAX before heading out. |

ICOA Unwires Spokane Airport with Vivato Equipment (Apr 26 2004 19:58 GMT) - Vivato's equipment will be used by ICOA to provide Wi-Fi service at the Spokane airport: The airport handles about 1.2 million passengers (counted once for enplanement/deplanement) per year. ICOA seems to be specializing in smaller but high-volume airports like Sacramento, Savannah/Hilton Head, and Fresno that require very little hardware but reach a million or more passengers a year. |

A suggestion to remember when composing exam questions (Apr 26 2004 19:57 GMT) - I'm grading, grading, grading. Here's an important tip: when writing exam questions for a physiology class, do not posit a hypothetical surgical question in which the student plays the role of the hypothetical doctor and you, the instructor, are the hypothetical patient. The first couple of students who get it wrong won't bother you much, but after a while, as the number of horrible mistakes pile up and you die a grisly death in exam after exam, you begin to take... |

UK Thinking About Protecting Ethical Hackers (Apr 26 2004 19:57 GMT) - There have been plenty of problems with laws that haven't even tried to distinguish between various types of computer break-ins. If someone is just trying to point out a vulnerability, do they deserve the same type of punishment as someone who breaks in, takes data and trashes a system? Some more tech savvy politicians in the UK are even considering protecting so-called "benign" hacking in an update on their computer misuse laws. Of course, the definition of "benign" is going to be problematic. In the article, for example, one politician suggests it should be legal to hack around censorship laws by the government to let users access websites the government has blocked. |
