Tonight's the night [Phil Woodford] (Apr 27 2004 22:58 GMT) - Now that I've got Ajit's attention, I think it's time for some serious thoughts on the whole business of ecademy. I could make it provocative, but I don't really want to. I respect a lot of the folk I've met here and don't want to wind anyone up unnecessarily. Just a few gentle observations. Thomas Power described ecademy today (I probably paraphrase slightly) as a place where people meet, talk and trade. |

OregonLive Weblog To Cover Jury Of Inquest From The Courtroom (Apr 27 2004 22:57 GMT) - Well, we're glad someone is doing this. According to this New Media Musings item, one Ethan Daniel Lindsey (author of the relatively-new Pearl Blog) will be covering this week's jury of inquest into the James Jahar Perez shooting live from the Multnomah County Courthouse. NMM quotes a message from Lindsey: As a longtime blogger and one I've tried to learn from, I was wondering if you would have any hints... |

Camera Phone Rules That Don't Seem New (Apr 27 2004 22:56 GMT) - Over in Australia, the government is sending out a set of camera phone guidelines to schools suggesting they implement the rules to deal with the growing popularity of camera phones. The rules include banning the use of camera phones in locker rooms and bathrooms, as well as disciplining those students who use camera phones to cheat or bully other students. These are all actions that require punishment, but I'm wondering why the technology needs to be singled out. I would assume that it's pretty obvious that you shouldn't be taking pictures in a locker room or bathroom. Isn't that already "banned" by the school? |

Human Traffic Jam (Apr 27 2004 22:56 GMT) - I came across this BBC article on African slavery and thought it post worthy.UNICEF recently released a report detailing the trafficking of women and children in Africa. "According to the study -- which assembles and analyzes data from across the continent -- half of African countries see trafficking in human beings as a serious problem, particularly with regard to women and children. There are no reliable estimates on the actual number of people trafficked, but the number of countries reporting trafficking in children is two times the number of the countries reporting trafficking in women, according to the report, launched here during an African Union ministerial meeting of Ministers of Labour and Social Affairs."Let's not forget the obvious AIDS epidemic that rages on in Africa. |

Astro Boy Vol 8 : 4 of 5 (Apr 27 2004 22:56 GMT) - This volume of my favorite robot hero contains Part 3 of the time-travel saga and wraps it up nicely. It contains lots of great moments in Astro's early life - the construction of his robot parents (who are mysteriously stolen by Tenma so he can teach Astro's robot mom to be just like his "real" Mom) and Astro's first days in school with Mustachio. The big story here is that some weird mold aliens from space are saved by Astro, so they decide to grant him a wish. Astro wants robots and humans to live in peace as equals, so the aliens make an announcement to a world to "scare" humanity into passing robot laws granting them rights! The insect girl Scara is reunited with her husband from two volumes ago, which ties up all the loose ends. |

SCO Asks Not to Litigate its Copyright Claims Against IBM, Or in the Alternative, Not Yet, Or Separately (Apr 27 2004 22:55 GMT) - [GrokLaw] - SCO has filed a cynical motion with the court handling the IBM case, asking that three of IBM's counterclaims be dropped, stayed or bifurcated. They call it their MOTION TO DISMISS, OR, IN THE ALTERNATIVE, TO SEPARATE OR STAY, COUNTS NINE, TEN AND FOURTEEN OF THE COUNTERCLAIM-PLAINTIFF IBM'S SECOND AMENDED COUNTERCLAIMS AGAINST SCO. Whew. There's a mouthful. I translate it that they are running screaming from having to litigate their " |
