Border protection (Apr 28 2004 14:59 GMT) - Labor抯 response to the Coalition抯 demonisation of refugees at the last election was to mimic the policy, and lose the election. Now it抯 repeating the mistake with marriage reform. Here抯 the money quote from the Australian, "Labor legal affairs spokeswoman Nicola Roxon said if getting married overseas was a way for gay couples to circumvent Australia's Marriage Act, the Opposition would be prepared to consider closing off this option by stopping Australian courts from... |

Southpaws (Apr 28 2004 14:58 GMT) - WOW, I guess there is nothing like a little gender theory to get everybody quiet. So maybe I'll get back to some other interesting things. Like lefthandedness and southpaws as the other. I HAD my IR Theory final yesterday and took two hours and fifteen minutes to write fourteen pages on three different subjects. So I wrote about postmodern IR theory, normative theory (the question was "Is justice incompatible with order? |

(Apr 28 2004 14:58 GMT) - I've been using Gmail for about 5 days now (found out via Evhead about the Blogger offer before the Slashdot story broke) and here are my first impressions: The service's reliability is very good indeed. Even for a beta, this beats Novell's MyRealbox, and is way better than the other 1 gig free email provider, Spymac. Search - Gmail's strongest pitch - still needs work. "tolkien" fails to match "tolkien's", etc. |

I post items to my ... (Apr 28 2004 14:57 GMT) - I post items to my blog for 2 major reasons; 1) to record an item or reference to an item so I can find it later. 2) to promote something posted elsewhere that I feel deserves (what little) exposure (I might offer). I have no desire what-so-ever to take credit for someone else's work. Anyone that knows me knows that. |

Geek Notes 2004-04-28 (Apr 28 2004 14:57 GMT) - So I forgot to tell you all about my favorite new toys. Basecamp: project-management web-app from 37Signals (Apr 28 2004 14:57 GMT) - 37Signals, a fantastic web-dev company, has produced a new project-management app called Basecamp that looks like a winner. Not only is it extremely pretty and easy-to-follow -- I'd expect no less from the usability wonks at 37Signals -- but it's also open: information flows out of the app as RSS and can be bulk-exported in XML, so none of your precious project-management material becomes a lever to lock you into paying the (surprisingly reasonable) monthly rates. ... Social Network Spam = SNAM (Apr 28 2004 14:57 GMT) - Snagged from Michael Tchong's "Trendsetters" newsletter:... ... Social networks have spawned a new form of spam that uses the FOAF (Friend of a Friend) message feature frequently found in this new genre of networks. Google's Orkut, a network of some 200,000 members, offers the ability to send messages to FOAFs. FOAF messages often contain conference promotions or job postings that, while low in volume, will one day require action on the part of network managers. |

The better you know it the more you hate it (Apr 28 2004 14:54 GMT) - Immigrants have added a lot to American culture. Now they're helping to remind us just how odious Communism is.Memories of the Red Menace may be fading in much of America, but they are very much alive in Orange County's Little Saigon. In a gesture that says a lot about the uncompromising anger that many Vietnamese emigres feel toward the regime they fled, leaders want to declare a no-Communist zone. Officials in Garden Grove and Westminster, two cities that share the sprawling district that is the hub of the world's largest Vietnamese population outside Vietnam, plan to propose today identical city... |
