The perfect lamp (Apr 29 2004 15:59 GMT) - Jessamyn writes: In brighter news, a trip to the carriage shed out back netted a bicycle for me, an adorable maroon three-speed that didn’t even need its tires pumped. It may seem odd to normal people to make discoveries in your own yard, but I know exactly how she feels. We are surrounded by five outbuildings— |

Super Goat Man (Apr 29 2004 15:59 GMT) - What had he gained in exchange for his iconic, trapped-in-amber status? Had Super Goat Man really accomplished much outside the parameters of his comics? However unglamorous the chores, didn't kittens need rescuing from trees? Didn't Vest Man require periodic defeating? Why jettison Ralph Gersten if in the end all you attained was the life of a campus mascot? |

A Republican's Case Against George W. Bush (Apr 29 2004 15:58 GMT) - Paul Findley, a Member of Congress for 22 years, is the author of They Dare to Speak Out: People and Institutions Confront Israel’s Lobby and chairman emeritus of the Council for the National Interest. This is one of the most compelling arguments that I have run across against Bush written by a Republican who cares about this country and of the implications we face if he's re-selected. A must read! |

Sheep in Wolfe's Clothing (Apr 29 2004 15:58 GMT) - Self-proclaimed public intellectual Alan Wolfe explains in The New Republic why it is that "believers have written the best books on atheism in recent years": Non-believers appear to have concluded either that the case against God is so obvious that it does not need to be argued or that the... |

Scott Rosenberg : "A president who pulled... (Apr 29 2004 15:58 GMT) - Scott Rosenberg: "A president who pulled family strings to get a berth in the Texas Air National Guard, and then couldn't even show up for that cushy job, sends out a vice president who won multiple draft deferments and candidly admits he had 'other priorities' more important than fighting under U.S. colors, to attack the 'judgment' of a Democratic candidate who both fought for his country and had the guts to turn against the war when its folly became evident." Justice served (Apr 29 2004 15:56 GMT) - One thing about living in a fledgling democracy is the daily changes which happen and the little things you notice changing, from people's attitudes to huge projects that are not just being discussed, but actually actioned in record times. But until yesterday, no one in their right mind in Bahrain would even think about suing the government, much less the Ministry of Interior for wrongful death and (a) live through it, (b) expect any kind of outcome, and (c) don't even hope that you will win (d) forget about the government being effectively indicted and held to book because of wrongs one of its employees committed. Yesterday, the final verdict was handed down in the case of a young man gunned down near the US Embassy in Manama two years ago. Regardless of why he was there with thousands of other people, and regardless of whatever he was doing if anything, over-whelming force to break up a demonstration should not have been used. Certainly not shooting a rubber bullet into his head from a distance of a few meters. |
