ATO posts fraud email warning (Apr 29 2004 23:10 GMT) - THE Australian Tax Office has posted a warning on its web site alerting the public to an increase in forged emails claiming to be official ATO correspondence. "Taxpayers should be aware that these forged emails may contain a virus and that they may be difficult to distinguish from legitimate Tax Office emails," the warning says. An ATO spokeswoman said the warning had been posted on the advice of the Tax IT department, which had alerted executives of the growing number of forged emails. The email was not specific to the ATO and did not represent any kind of attack on the ATO, the spokeswoman said. While the malicious email was similar to those that have plagued banks and other large institutions, they did not represent classic a "phishing" attack, but could contain a virus. |

Whoa (Apr 29 2004 23:08 GMT) - Here's a fun and potentially useful little program. Neotrace Express lets you put in a domain name or ip address, and it will map the path that data takes from your computer to that address. For instance, I put in brendoman.com and the map shows my data going from Kansas city to Dallas to Anaheim to Baltimore to LA. I've often wondered what path data takes from a server to my computer, and this program can show you. |
