Rejsen til Fort Europa (Apr 30 2004 00:00 GMT) - Michael Winterbottoms overbevisende og barske Berlinvinder, ‘In This World', burde få al snak om bekvemmelighedsflygtninge til at forstumme, skriver Claus Christensen i en anmeldelse. |

Pelosi Chastises McDermott (Apr 30 2004 00:00 GMT) - During each session in the House of Representatives one lawmaker takes a turn at leading the rest in the pledge of allegiance. Today was Rep. Jim McDermott's turn and, in an apparent attempt to make a statement, he left a... |

4.29.04 EXCUSE ME (Apr 30 2004 00:00 GMT) - From the back of the bus comes a belch that sends out sound waves you can feel against your skin. The volume and intensity of this belch are unrivaled. Everyone turns, ears ringing, to find the culprit slouched in his seat. He has pulled up the neck of his T-shirt to cover his mouth. "EX-cuuse me. |

flip flops (Apr 30 2004 00:00 GMT) - This week it has rained a lot after a short burst of sunshine. So I find it difficult to understand why people have decided that flipflops are now practical springtime footwear. In London when it is wet they must the the most... |

Agnes, Queen of Sorrow (Apr 30 2004 00:00 GMT) - There's a cartoon to accompany the song with the above title, one of the highlights of Bonnie 'Prince' Billy's perfect recent LP. Usually, I'd say amination sucks but the music is like a summer's picnic on the South Downs with one's dearly beloved, if suc |

Spam tally day four (Apr 30 2004 00:00 GMT) - Day four of the spam count (out of seven) and the tally is roughly 10 times the total for the whole week when I did this back in 2002. Back then I thought 200-odd was pretty shocking, but it's nothing compared to this. On a brighter note, today's payload included 16 genuine emails, but on a downer there was a piece of comment spam on this blog from, of all people, Tesco. Well, I say it was from Tesco, but... |

New blogs (Apr 30 2004 00:00 GMT) - Ooh, look - two new MacUser people blogs (here and here), both using the excellent Mindsay, which allows you to post using iChat. I wish you could post to Movable Type that way, as it's far easier than logging in and typing your entry into a series of windows. I've done a hunt for posting to Movable Type by email and it looks far too tricky to attempt in an evening. Instead, then, I've started work on a news parsing... |

Living and Teaching in a War Zone (Apr 30 2004 00:00 GMT) - Weve gone several times to play games with the kids, interview the families, deliver toys and on one occasion, in the words of my British friend Jo Wilding, I came along for a knickers delivery to the woman at the shelter. Many told us stories of the kinds of collateral damage that are occurring inside Fallujah, with women, children, and the elderly being injured or killed. |

Iraq: U.S. Prisoner Abuse Sparks Concerns Over War Crimes (Apr 30 2004 00:00 GMT) - The promised U.S. investigation into the mistreatment of Iraqi prisoners should not stop with the lower-level soldiers who were immediately involved, Human Rights Watch said today. The United States should also investigate the superiors of these soldiers to see whether they ordered or knowingly tolerated these abuses. |

Annan ‘deeply disturbed’ by images of Iraqi prisoners being mistreated (Apr 30 2004 00:00 GMT) - United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan is “deeply disturbed” by images appearing in the media of Iraqi prisoners being mistreated and humiliated by United States prison guards, his spokesman said today. The Secretary-General “hopes that this was an isolated incident and welcomes what appears to be a clear determination on the part of the US military to bring those responsible to justice, and to prevent such abuses in the future,” |

Torture not isolated—independent investigations vital (Apr 30 2004 00:00 GMT) - There is a real crisis of leadership in Iraq—with double standards and double speak on human rights, Amnesty International said today. “The latest evidence of torture and ill-treatment emerging from Abu Ghraib prison will exacerbate an already fragile situation,” Amnesty International said. |
