On the Trail to Atlantis (Apr 30 2004 02:26 GMT) - On the Trail to Atlantis Here we go again with silly season stories. Surely a landmass that sank 10,000 or so years ago would have no features recognizable today. And didn't Plato specifically say Atlantis was beyond the Pillars of Heracles (today's Straits of Gibraltar), that is, in the Atlantic Ocean? [via Slashdot, 2004-04-30] |

ISOBuster (Apr 30 2004 02:25 GMT) - ISOBuster This looks like a really useful tool, but... Lots of features of IsoBuster are entirely for free, others need to be paid for. All the functionality prior to version 1.0 is still for free and remains free. Unfortunately, this webpage doesn't tell you which features are free. |

Annan stresses freedom of expression in new technologies. (Apr 30 2004 02:25 GMT) - UN News, While Annon stresses freedom of expression on the internet in his speeches, Intel is backing a UN forum for diplomats on how to use the internet. 21 April 2004 – If the communications revolution is to open doors rather than close them, policy-makers must support the providers of content so that they are guaranteed freedom of expression, United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan told an Asian media summit in Kuala Lumpur today. In a second article, diplomats are being trained in "security issues". But, is what Annan saying conflicting with what the UN is doing? Headquarters to host seminar on policy, security issues in information technology on 23 april The first 2004 high-level seminar on “Policy and security issues in information technology” and the official launching ceremony for the 2004 series of seminars will be held at United Nations Headquarters, Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) |

Airport Security and CAPPS II (Apr 30 2004 02:25 GMT) - "The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Inspector General and the Congressional General Accounting Office (GAO) have both submitted reports on the competence of airport passenger and baggage screeners, and found, not surprisingly, that they are no more effective today than they were before the security frenzy brought about by the 11 September atrocities." "CAPPS II is a disaster for two reasons: first, it will create a false sense of security among airline staff and provide further excuses for screeners to perform poorly; |

Kid Busted for Anti-Bush Drawings (Apr 30 2004 02:25 GMT) - "Another pencil-and-ink drawing portrayed Bush as a devil launching a missile, with a caption reading "End the war -- on terrorism." The 15-year-old boy's art teacher at Prosser High School turned the drawings over to school administrators, who notified police, who called the Secret Service." Full Article |

Comment Spammers (Apr 30 2004 02:24 GMT) - When I see comment spam from a company that is presumably trying to run an actual business, as opposed to a porn site or on line Viagra outlet, I feel the need to point it out not only to them but also to you. These comment spammers are running a web solutions web site ... or so they say. If one of their web solutions is to comment spam, I think they might need to rethink their business plan. I informed them of my displeasure, and now I inform you so you can avoid doing business with Effective-Web. |

Why Salmon Matter (Apr 30 2004 02:22 GMT) - The Bush Administration is all about lying. So it's not surprising to hear they're going to change the way salmon are counted. You might not realize why salmon matter if you don't live in the Northwest. You see, 4 of 5 salmon are produced in hatcheries. When Bush includes them in the count, they're no longer endangered. |

What about the 800 x 600 resolution people? (Apr 30 2004 02:21 GMT) - Quote: "I think part of the decision comes from your audience. If your audience is young adults in their early 20's then a higher resolution may be in order. If the site is about pensioner's insurance a lower resolution would probably be best." I tend to agree with targeting your audience, except when it comes to ecommerce. |
