Blog flesh, blog bones. (Apr 30 2004 03:27 GMT) - Academic superstar and newbie blogger Michael Bérubé confronts the seductive appeal of traffic statistics: Seriously, it looks as if this site has had just over 20,000 visitors in April, which would give us three straight months at the 20,000 level. At some point this month I found myself actually getting into this site-meter thing--it's sort of like the Arts and Humanities Citation Index on steroids (and that would be a bad thing). |

The General Accounting Office report, presented at a congressional hearing into the... |

Gah. Money. My leave pay still hasn't come in f... (Apr 30 2004 03:27 GMT) - Gah. Money. My leave pay still hasn't come in from my old job, and I don't know when I'll be getting Centerlink payments. Sigh, what shite. House party tonight, I'm trying to think who to invite, and how to invite them- I don't know anyone, and I can't make calls on my phone. |

Panda Golf (Apr 30 2004 03:27 GMT) - It's pissing it down outside. It has been for days now, and it looks as though it will for a few more days yet. I think Sunday's Run What You Brung* may be a bit wet, but we won't let that dampen our spirits**. On the plus side, my lawn is in great condition. It's already meadow-like after being cut two weeks ago. |

Hotel Headache (Apr 30 2004 03:27 GMT) - Last night I was trying to watch the snooker in peace. It wasn't much to ask, but Wild kept pinching my arm and humming loudly doing his best 'bee' impression, and Taz was snoring like a drugged squirrel. I decided to check into the hotel down the road for the night. Little did I know that they were just starting a bunch of experiments on their guests. I woke up this morning not remembering anything about the snooker, but with a book of matches with the words 'come back soon Big Boy' written in blue biro. |

Getting Notes Working On Linux (Thursday, Apr 29) (Apr 30 2004 03:27 GMT) - I know I've been pretty silent lately, but I've been all wrapped up getting my new Linux desktop configured. As an example of my progress, here's a screenshot of R5 running on Linux using Wine (click it for a larger image): I was having trouble getting Notes 6.5 to work, but then I read Peter Leugner's recent post on LDD and realized that I'll probably have to upgrade to 6.51 to get that right. |

DON’T BE EVIL (Apr 30 2004 03:24 GMT) - That's the best part of the Google S-1 filing: the letter from its two young co-founders, where they enunciate the guiding principles of thr firm they helped found: "Don’t be evil. |

Macromedia/Sorenson's H.263 Implementation (Apr 30 2004 03:24 GMT) - H.263 is a video format the is pretty similar to what you find in MPEG. Like a lot of digital video formats, the first place size reduction happens is at the color level. As it turns out, having an equal representation of R, G, and B values like you are probably used to can be pretty wasteful. For example, your eye can recognize far more shades of green than red or blue. |

Many ABC stations won't be running Nightline "tribute" (Apr 30 2004 03:23 GMT) - Sinclaire Broadcasting Group owns a bunch of ABC affiliate stations. They have decided not to air an upcoming "Nightline" episode that will spend 40 minutes reading the names of US troops who have died in Iraq, claimimg the program is a political statement disguised as news. They have a point. In the past, Nightline's coverage of America's efforts in Iraq haven't been terribly supportive. Certainly, I think Sinclaire Broadcasting has every right to show or not show any program they want on their stations. |

All mp3s, no liability? (Apr 30 2004 03:23 GMT) - I mentioned allofmp3.com here yesterday. I've tried it out - it can be slow at times (assumedly this is due to the sudden interest in them from the media & webloggers) but it's a pretty cool service overall. This came into my newsreader a little while ago, from a Sydney Morning Herald article on the subject: We sought some advice from a Melbourne barrister... |
