Unless you're the immigration-obsessed website VDare, which smartly redirects attention to the they-keep-coming implications: I wish the Israelis would show him around, and point out the things that Israel has that California lacks. April 30 - Nightline is doing the right thing (Apr 30 2004 04:29 GMT) - If you stop thinking of Friday's Nightline in terms of liberals and conservatives, Democrats and Republicans, and anti-war and pro-war people, you might realize that reading the names of fallen soldiers is something we should see as a great honor for them and their families. We shouldn't be cynical or overjoyed during the reading of the names, we should be grateful to the people whose names are read. We shouldn't think about politics or the upcoming presidential race during the reading of the names, we should think about how much those soldiers gave, and how good it is to finally give them recognition . . . |

Photos show jail abuse by US troops (Apr 30 2004 04:28 GMT) - Photos show jail abuse by US troops United States soldiers at a prison outside Baghdad have been accused of forcing Iraqi prisoners into acts of sexual humiliation and other abuses. The charges, first announced by the military in March, were documented by photographs taken by guards in the prison. Some of the photographs, and descriptions of others, were broadcast in the US on Wednesday by a CBS television news program and were verified by military officials. Of the six people reported in March to be facing preliminary charges, three have been recommended for courts martial. The program reported that poorly trained US reservists were forcing Iraqis to conduct simulated sexual acts in order to break down their will before they were turned over to others for interrogation. |

A Different Kind of Credit Card Statement (Apr 30 2004 04:28 GMT) - Visa Toys With Credit Card Displays "Visa International is experimenting with credit cards that include a small display screen where customers could view recent transactions, bank balances, or local currency exchange rates, says Deborah Arnold, Visa's vice president of global consumer strategies.... Visa expects to have produced working prototypes of the devices in about a year's time, Arnold says, although with security and other technology issues still to be ironed out, it's likely to be a few years before such cards become widely available. In addition, the LCD-like screens being used in early designs are too fragile for everyday use, Arnold says.... Another issue with the use of display screens on credit cards is cost-effectiveness, she says. 'It's all expensive--the cost of the battery, the display, hooking [the display] up to the chip. |
