....the United States has put ... (Apr 30 2004 06:52 GMT) - ....the United States has put its Armed Forces in the control of utterly incompetent strategists -- a bunch of essential "bad shots" who do not know the difference between military skill and mere firepower, who shoot at mosquitos with machine guns, who liberate countries by destroying their territories, whose principal weapon is no weapon at all but an instrument of mutual suicide, and whose political motivations, based on the puerile division of the world into "good guys" and "bad guys" cannot allow that enemies are also people, as distinct from demonic henchmen of a satanic ideology.-Alan Watts, DOES IT MATTER?, 1967 |

NOT good (Apr 30 2004 06:50 GMT) - Never let it be said that I will not poiint out a negative about something for which I care. I have been, for a long time now, pro-military and this week I have been wrapped up in a lot of warblogging and ra-ra troop cheering, but I am also not blind. Like all of humanity, the military contains some bad apples. Lee... |

The war I may have ... (Apr 30 2004 06:49 GMT) - The war I may have been wrong about the motives behind our war on Iraq. When it was suggested that the war in Iraq was a stepping stone to spreading freedom to the world through extreme methodology, I knee-jerked that the energy industry's greed and Bush family vendetta were guiding the war. Now, after watching Frontline's The Jesus Factor and having listened to evangelicals talk for the last 40 years or so, I believe President Bush's evangelical beliefs are being used by the greedy, vengeful right to sway what was quoted as 40% of Americans and 70% of voters who are deeply religious, into thinking that the Armageddon war is upon us, thus we need God's chosen president. The terrorists, who have a whack ideological bent as well, are none the less, religiously motivated to believe that our society is evil, just as we believe that fundamentalist Islam is. We attacked a place where major factions of the Moslem world have been held together by totalitarian force. |

~~~~~~~ KILL BILL AT WORK This morning on ... (Apr 30 2004 06:45 GMT) - ~~~~~~~KILL BILL AT WORKThis morning on my rush-hour way through Osaka's Umeda Station to the office, after I had put my commuter's pass in the wicket at one end and taken it out at the other as I passed through in zombie mode, I suddenly found myself, for no reason I could perceive, thinking 'Kill Bill.' But there was no Bill around; nor is there a Bill at the office. Under normal circumstances, under any circumstances I could think of in fact, short of being forced to sit for a screening under threat of a Bush re-election, I would never think spontaneously of any 'bread and circuses' movie, especially one I haven't seen and don't plan to see. This was odd. |
