EPIC Grandstanding, Makes Up Google-FBI Link (Apr 30 2004 07:19 GMT) - The folks at EPIC usually fight the good fight to protect privacy rights, but they've just gone completely overboard this time. They've filed a Freedom of Information request with the FBI worded in a way to suggest that the FBI is working with Google to launch Gmail as a way to spy on people. Once again, if people dislike the idea of Gmail so much, they have every right not to sign up for it. As if it was even needed, Google has responded by saying that they've never spoken to the FBI about Gmail. |

It applies to Vajpayee too (Apr 30 2004 07:18 GMT) - "We are all capable of believing things which we know to be untrue, and then, when we are finally proved wrong, impudently twisting the facts so as to show that we were right. Intellectually, it is possible to carry on this process for an indefinite time: the only check on it is that sooner or later a false belief bumps up against solid reality, usually on a battlefield." That's from George Orwell's 1946 essay "In Front of Your Nose." [Paul Krugman/NYT]Krugman quoted Orwell in the context of George W. |

An Idea (Apr 30 2004 07:17 GMT) - I have an idea, and I'm ready to have it shot full of holes, but here goes... Part of the reason we find ourselves with nothing but sensationalist, yellow journalism on the television is that about 20 (30?) years ago, the networks made their news programming a profit center. It wasn't like that prior to that time (and we got first rate news). In order to have a license from the FCC, you must provide a certain percentage of programming that is public service and news. |
