Take off the Pretty Shirt Day (Apr 30 2004 15:59 GMT) - Cheerfully dressed in my Fuck STARR t-shirt, I walked around the school before yesterday's WLUSU board of directors meeting smiling madly. Craig appreciated my sense of style. "You incendiary bastard!" he said. "I'm merely a vessel for student dissatisfaction," I... |

Court clarifies anti-trust law in Europe (Apr 30 2004 15:59 GMT) - The European Court of Justice Thursday set an important precedent that will become a reference point in Microsoft's appeal against the recent European Commission anti-trust ruling against it, according to Brussels-based anti-trust lawyers. Although both sides in that pending court room battle claim that Thursday's judgement helps them, the lawyers reckon it will help the regulator, not Microsoft. |

At Last, the Unpleasant Truth (Apr 30 2004 15:58 GMT) - Robert Waldmann's wife observes that rabbits do not understand topology: robert's random thoughts:Elisabetta Addis just said "Rabbits don't understand topology" and she meant it. Our pet rabbit was grazing on a long leash which it had managed to loop around various trees, sop the comment was practical. It made me wonder if anyone had ever said "Rabbits don't understand topology" in all of human history (pre-history is a snap since prehistoric people didn't talk much about topology). |

Another RSS Hack (Apr 30 2004 15:58 GMT) - Internally, some of the non-Smalltalk groups at Cincom are using SharePoint (we use Wikis in the ST group). SharePoint seems like a natural for exporting RSS, and there's a free part for doing just that. There's a problem though - it generates odd RSS. It defines a namespace like this: xmlns: |

I like Eclipse (Apr 30 2004 15:56 GMT) - Tobias, siteSucker seems to be an array of concurrent HttpGet threads. Volker, some remarks, maybe interesting for a Java newbie: - There is no need to use "new Long(timeDiff).toString()", because (a) .toString() is always automatically called by the concatenation operator "+" and (b) timeDiff is automatically convertet into a String when used in String concatenation. |

Charles Krauthammer - WaPo's Worst (Apr 30 2004 15:56 GMT) - WaPo's editorial page, as of late, has become...crappy. This is due most likely to the fact that registration is now required to access it, a trend that has become more common during 2004, but mostly because of uninformed drivel. This... |

Later today Carrie and I ... (Apr 30 2004 15:56 GMT) - Later today Carrie and I will be flying to Pittsburgh to attend a friend's wedding. Said friend responded to the delicate question of giftolatry with this hi-larious missive: Comrade! Its funny you should mention this quaint bourgeois custom; the Teeming Masses and I were just discussing it yesterday over coffee. |

Windows XP users try their best to simulate Mac OS X (Apr 30 2004 15:55 GMT) - Windows XP users have serious cases of Mac OS X lust. Trying to simulate Mac OS X on Windows XP is turning into quite the hobby lately. While Microsoft is taking its own sweet time (years) to come up with a version of Windows (Longhorn) that tries to look and work like Apple's Mac OS X, Windows XP users are taking matters into their own hands while they wait and wait, then wait some more. "Look closely, and you'll see that its creator has done a very good job; although the... |
