Does anybody really care about the issue of Torture? [Maurizio Morabito] (May 05 2004 23:55 GMT) - Beyond the standard, expected, automatic, perhaps even hypocritical “horror” reaction, that is Here a few reasons to doubt that the present barrage of allegations of torture in Iraq goes any deeper than the thickness of a newspaper’s front page: People all over the world claim to be horrified by the photographs. Where were they all when it was Saddam Hussein in charge of frying, beating and humiliating prisoners? Does a man dying at the hands of torturers in a prison die a lesser death if there are no cameras to record the event? What would the Syrian and Egyptian governments say about letting a few cameras inside one of their prisons right now? |
