The Worm Within (May 07 2004 23:56 GMT) - Vincent Eaton's tale of his encounter with a tapeworm is both amusing and educating. It comes complete with luscious illustrations from Chris Bishop. For some, everything that occurs at the toilet bowl requires denying. After voiding their bowels, they scamper to a corner, kneel and pray. Then there's the type that actually bends down to study the stuff like tea leaves. |

Guess I'll go eat Worms (May 07 2004 23:55 GMT) - Caissa, I'm sorry to hear that. I'm going to recommend that you use a personal firewall program like zonelabs zonealarm also. Was your old computer running Windows XP? If so, Microsoft is supposed to be releasing a service pack update for windows XP sometime in the very near future that will not have that vulnerability. Maybe you can reinstall, and update the old one, and have it function again. |

The list keeps on growing (May 07 2004 23:53 GMT) - It's worth keeping an eye on the list of people and groups who now claimed to have warned people about what was going on at Abu Ghraib and went unheard. (Or, in some cases, mentioned it before 60 Minutes II ran the horrific photos that I've seen too many times.) Spec. Joseph M. Darby (unknown timing) Colin Powell (via Kevin Drum) Paul Bremer (last fall) General Antonio Taguba (late February) (Taguba has now learned, it seems, that no good deed goes unpunished. |

What's good for Republicans ... (May 07 2004 23:53 GMT) - What's good for Republicans is good for America, no? And by Republicans, I mean the rich people who keep the GOP machine rolling, not the working people who are just along for the ride. You have to scroll down a bit to see the graph, which illustrates that corporate profits are going up, up, up, and labor compensation is going down, down, down (both relative to the overall size of the economy). If you combine that graph with one that shows the overall size of the pie, adjusted for inflation, you'd get a better picture of how labor is doing overall, but I don't have the data or the Excel chops. |

Flash! Intelligent Life Found at Microsoft (May 07 2004 23:52 GMT) - After posting the item about spam and the recent relationship between Microsoft and whitelist provider IronPort, I got a letter from Reeves Little of Microsoft. Initially, he asked for some clarification about my opinions involving whitelists, but as we traded letters, we got into a pretty good discussion about Microsoft’s efforts to do something about spam and e-mailed viruses. I think that the whole thing is worth reading, since it reveals a side of Microsoft that outsiders seldom see. I’m going to edit out some personal items that have nothing to contribute and paste in the rest. |
