When Finance meets Computer Science (May 18 2004 00:57 GMT) - This past Friday I had lunch with Paul Haubrich, a computer equipment leasing expert who reminded me of the benefits of operating leases. Suppose you become the new CIO of a company and discover that you're constrained by large capital investments in new computer hardware. It may be to your advantage to enter into a sale leaseback agreement for the hardware -- you'll have free cash for new projects, and you'll be protected from technology obsolescence.... |

More lost productivity (May 18 2004 00:56 GMT) - Charles Miller points out that Java's type system is stupid even if you like static typing: A good way to get an idea of how stupid Java's type system is, is to use a modern Java IDE for a while. Start using IDEA's intention actions, and see just how often IDEA knows what the type of an object is going to be before you bother to assign it a type, or make a cast. Every time you ask the IDE to assign a cast, create a field or iterate over a collection and you select the default value, you're telling the compiler something that IDEA was smart enough to know already. And with 1. |

Things We Do for Love (May 18 2004 00:56 GMT) - Legit Reviews: Perhaps, in writing his 52nd full-length produced play, the ever-prolific Brit scripter Alan Ayckbourn decided to incorporate as many theatrical styles as possible just to see what would happen. What starts out as a barbed, Noel Cowardesque romantic comedy gets downright sexy, dark and guilt-ridden, with a touch of physical abuse thrown in. |

Powell on Meet The Press (May 18 2004 00:55 GMT) - Mike Flugenock has shared this Real Media video clip of Secretary of State Colin Powell on NBC's Meet The Press appearance yesterday. Powell's press secretary tried to cut the interview short. Tim Russert, the host, for all his flaws, sometimes will hit hard or try to. Apparently a question (I didn't think it was so hard-hitting, only worth it -- maybe -- for posterity's sake) irked the press secretary and he tried to cut-off the taping of the interview by moving the camera off of Powell. Here is the portion of the transcript (http: |

I still have one day of training left and that will be a day of driving and showing them that I know what I'm doing. I really don't anymore because I haven”t done anything for two weeks. |
