Google plans Desktop Search (May 19 2004 23:57 GMT)

- NYTimes writes about Google's plans "to introduce a powerful file and text software search tool for locating information stored on personal computers": The Google software project, which is code-named Puffin and which will be available as a free download from Google's Web site, has been running internally at the company for about a year. The project was started, in part, to prepare Google for competing with Windows Longhorn, which according to industry analysts will dispense with the need for a stand-alone browser. The disappearance of the Web browser and the integration of both Web search and PC search into the Windows operating system could potentially marginalize Google's search engine. Google, well aware of this threat, hired a Microsoft product manager last year to oversee the Puffin project as part of its strategy to compete with Microsoft's incursion into its territory.

I was reading the June 8, 2004 issue of PC Magazine the other day and something caught my eye. (May 19 2004 23:55 GMT)

- One of the big features in this issue is "Utilities". One major thing that caught my eye was the Dogpile Toolbar. It's much like any other standard toolbar, but one thing that sets this one apart is that you can add RSS and Atom feeds that scroll right in the toolbar or are fed to a local content page right on your hard drive. It's quite cool... When I got home yesterday, I was BEAT.

Day Two (May 19 2004 23:54 GMT)

- The first few days of chemo have been uneventful and exactly what I expected. We have formulated a plan for the next four weeks, one round of methotrexate after another. The tough part is that your body reacts on a multi-week cycle to the abuse, and most doctors give you two weeks off after a week on to stabilize between rounds. Not so in my case, there will be no rest weeks, and it's pretty certain I'm going to get progressively whacked over the remaining 26 days. At the end of this period, there is a specific soft-tissue section of the tumor which we will scan to look for shrinkage, since the bone tumor may die, but it never shrinks visibly on a scan.

Unplanned opposition to government internet snooping (May 19 2004 23:48 GMT)

- Something rather remarkable has just happened. I am watching Baddiel and Skinner Unplanned, and they have just had a serious discussion about how they really did not like the fact that the Government can tell exactly which internet sites you have just been visiting, and read all your emails, and send you to prison if you encrypt them and do not tell them the key, or whatever it is. Baddiel and Skinner never have serious...

The red line turns yellow (May 19 2004 23:48 GMT)

- We never saw this coming, did we? The Government signalled yesterday that it was willing to breach the first of its "red line" safeguards on the European constitution by agreeing to cede Britain's veto over sensitive areas of criminal justice. The shift in policy raises fears that Brussels could acquire the power to interfere with the common law tradition of habeas corpus, trial by jury, and rules of evidence. Whereas, until today, nobody had ever...

The Civilian Space eXploration Team's 6.5m (21ft) GoFast rocket is understood to have exceeded an altitude of 100km.

Chalk dust mayhem in the House of Commons (May 19 2004 23:48 GMT)

The good news you don't hear (May 19 2004 23:48 GMT)

DEMOCRACY TAKES ROOT: Democracy is spreading - from the ground up, as it should: "In the province of Dhi Qar, about 230 miles southeast of Baghdad and a backwater even by Iraq's standards, residents voting as families will have elected city councils in 16 of the 20 biggest cities by next month." The fat fraud (May 19 2004 23:48 GMT)

- The May 1 issue of New Scientist contains an item 'Why our fears about fat are misplaced' written by Paul Campos, a Professor of Law from the University of Colorado. We have often stated our belief fat is the new job frontier for government bureaucracy and Professor Campos seems to agree with us. He states unequivocally that no research directly links fat to shorter lifespans. Sedentery lifestyles and other factors, yes. Fat alone?
