Yet Another Grant Morrison Interview (May 21 2004 11:50 GMT) - [comics] New Age of Morrison -- another interview with Grant Morrison... 'The real problem is this: in spite of all our attempts to insist that one exists, there is actually NO mass market for traditional superhero comic books - why would there be? It's such an esoteric and old-fashioned branch of popular culture and seems to have more in common with collecting stamps or 60s retro kitsch. You can imagine Bryan Hitch drawing Steve Buscemi playing the sort of guy most people think is into these kinds of comics. |

A Security Kernel Based on the Lambda-Calculus (May 21 2004 11:48 GMT) - A Security Kernel Based on the Lambda-Calculus. (via our really great dicussion group) This report describes Scheme 48, a programming environment whose design is guided by established principles of operating system security. Scheme 48's security kernel is small, consisting of the call-by-value lambda-calculus with a few simple extensions to support abstract data types, object mutation, and access to hardware resources. Each agent (user or subsystem) has a separate evaluation environment that holds objects representing privileges granted to that agent. Because environments ultimately determine availability of object references, protection and sharing can be controlled largely by the way in which environments are constructed. |

A story about big Silicon Valley companies (May 21 2004 11:48 GMT) - In 1990 we were licensing the UserLand IAC Toolkit to other developers. Our first and only licensee was Claris, an Apple subsidiary run by Bill Campbell, Yogen Dalal and John Zeisler. Their products included MacWrite, MacPaint, Hypercard, maybe Filemaker? Not sure. They were a friendly company, nice guys. |

Oxygen delivered through the nose may improve poor ... (May 21 2004 11:46 GMT) - Oxygen delivered through the nose may improve poor vision caused by diabetic macular edema, fluid buildup in the part of the eye responsible for central vision, according to a pilot study by scientists at Johns Hopkins and the National Eye Institute. In a study of five diabetic patients with persistent macular edema, breathing supplemental oxygen for three months reduced fluid buildup and swelling in the macula and, in some cases, improved visual acuity. Researchers think the therapy could be used in conjunction with laser treatments that also improve oxygenation in the retina to provide long-term stability in these patients."The results were really dramatic," says Peter A.
