must be harder than it looks (Jun 30 2004 23:56 GMT) - stevenberlinjohnson.com: Apple's Ten-Year-Old Breakthrough: I think it's pretty ironic that the most highly-touted feature in Tiger is one they've been trying to get into a shipping OS for almost ten years. Sometimes information society isn't quite as fast as it's rumored to be. |

This is some leftover pork ... (Jun 30 2004 23:52 GMT) - This is some leftover pork from last Saturday. After about an hour simmering, I drained and saved the liquid, like you would for boudin, but instead of grinding the pork and onions (the peppers, used up, were discarded) I returned them to the reddish stock after it had reduced about 50%. This was simmered for a few hours until the pork basically disintegrated, then cooked down to this consistency. Makes a decent sandwich. |

Is Kazaa Over? (Jun 30 2004 23:52 GMT) - As someone who has never used Kazaa, I have no idea how its use has changed over time, but apparently, more and more users are bailing out. They're fed up with the adware, the lawsuits (which often target Kazaa users) and all the bogus files. Of course, while that might sound like wonderful news for the recording industry, it's actually much worse. Users aren't giving up on file sharing, they're just switching to other offerings that include more useful features and less annoying crap (gee, what a surprise). The article points out that the various lawsuits against Kazaa owner Sharman appear to be taking their toll as the product has been unable to keep up. |

Inane copyright regulations (Jun 30 2004 23:51 GMT) - RAIN -- the Radio And Internet Newsletter -- carries weekly stories on what's going on the fledgling web radio market, a fact which always surprises me since I didn't know that very much was going on there at all. Part of the reason why can be outlined in the labyrinthian rules that surround webcasting.Reading through the differences between ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC, along with the odd implementations, tortured reasoning, and dubious logic, it's clear that these are the result of all kinds of backroom arm-twisting, compromises, guesses, and mistakes. Just like most every decision. What keeps them in place is that we have a "good enough" radio and music system that lets us, by and large, listen to what we want when we want, kind of. |
