Research in former Soviet archives on issues of historical political economy (Jun 01 2004 02:57 GMT) - This Web site belongs to the Economics Department of the Warwick University and focuses on the problems of Soviet economic development. It aims to promote economic research, by younger scholars in particular, in the former Soviet archives on issues of historical political economy, including economic history. The site includes Web-based information on Russian archives by providing links to other resources, such as Arkhivy Rossii - a Russian language site maintained by the Federal Archival Service of Russia, Introducation to Russian Archives - the English language site maintained by Olga Glagoleva of the University of Toronto, Rusarchive-L - an e-mail list devoted to issues connected with Russian archives, and others. One of the most valuable pages of this site called "Using the Russian Archives: an Informal Practical Guide for Beginners Based on Users' Experience" (available in PDF format) originates from a hard copy which was published in UK in 1999 and then revised for Web publication in 2002. |

Camping in the Granite Hills (Jun 01 2004 02:49 GMT) - I am loathe to do this. This spring has been so full of flowers blooming and sweet fragrances in the air and birds singing and the sun shining. I should not do this, but... There was a breeze coming over the lake. Although the air was hot, it was comfortable by the water. |

Programming is like Songwriting (Jun 01 2004 02:30 GMT) - [Meerkat: An Open Wire Service] - From 1988 to 2000 I made my full-time living making music. I used to spend a huge amount of my time writing songs. Lyrics, melodies, grooves, tracks, arrangements, etc. As I get more and more into programming, I'm constantly struck with how similar it feels to songwriting. |

Adventures in Domesticity (Jun 01 2004 02:28 GMT) - Some people spend Memorial Day weekend barbequeing dead animals. Others spend it honoring those who've sacrificed their lives in wars. I, on the other hand, spent Memorial Day weekend... installing a new bath fan. "The whole weekend? |

Long live CORBA! (Jun 01 2004 02:23 GMT) - The computing world has changed a lot since 1991. The powerful computers needed to run CORBA back in those days can now fit in the palm of your hand, so the overhead and bulk of CORBA is no longer a major issue. Meanwhile, the CORBA specification has been cleaned up and clarified, dozens of books have been written about it, and thousands of engineers have been trained to use it. That means CORBA isn't as esoteric as it once was, and its learning curve isn't as steep. More importantly, the need to build distributed systems hasn't gone away. |

Going it alone part 2 (Jun 01 2004 02:19 GMT) - Well, Segment were pretty darn cool.. straight on the phone, highly supportive and all sorts of good! I have issues with their pricing though as there seem to be a lot of more affordable, more bandwidth, more storage solutions out there. Fore example, all of these. POWWEB looks nice but doing a bit of research has mixed reviews. |

It's happening again (Jun 01 2004 02:19 GMT) - John Howard's contempt for the Australian people continues its exponetial growth. It seems that there is nothing over which he and his government are not willing to mislead the public. The latest example is in regard to when and what... |
